Abstract

We analyze the two-photon absorption and emission process and characterize the stationary states at zero and positive temperature. We show that entangled stationary states exist only at zero temperature and, at positive temperature, there exists infinitely many commuting invariant states satisfying the detailed balance condition.

Exact stationary photon distributions due to competition between one- and two-photon absorption and emission

V. V. Dodonov, Salomon Sylvain Mizrahi

We consider steady states of the one-mode quantized field interacting with two independent baths, each characterized by the one- and two-photon absorption and emission processes. In the absense of two-photon emission, using an exact analytical solution to the master equation for the diagonal elements of the density matrix in the Fock basis in terms of the confluent hypergeometric function, we obtain simple explicit expressions for the photon distribution function and for the factorial moments in the limiting cases of weak and strong two-photon absorption. If the two-photon absorption is strong enough, the steady state exhibits a sub-Poissonian photon statistics characterizing nonclassical behaviour, but Mandel's -parameter cannot be less . However, the distribution depends essentially on the temperature of the `one-photon bath'. For weak two-photon absorption, the stationary distribution is Gaussian, provided that the temperature of the `one-photon' bath is high enough. For an inversely populated `one-photon' bath, the -parameter is close to . In a generic case of nonzero two-photon emission probability, approximate asymptotic expressions for the factorial moments are found.

Spectral properties of the two-photon absorption and emission process

Raffaella Carbone, Franco Fagnola, J. C. García +1 more

The quantum Markov semigroup of the two-photon absorption and emission process has two extremal normal invariant states. Starting from an arbitrary initial state it converges toward some convex combination of these states as time goes to infinity (approach to equilibrium). We compute the exact exponential rate of this convergence showing that it depends only on the emission rates. Moreover, we show that off-diagonal matrix elements of any initial state go to zero with an exponential rate which is smaller than the exponential rate of convergence of the diagonal part. In other words quantum features of a state survive longer than the relaxation time of its classical part.

Exploring energy-time entanglement using the dynamics of two-photon absorption

Baihong Li, Holger Friedrich Hofmann

Two photon absorption processes are known to be sensitive to energy-time entanglement between the absorbed photons. It should therefore be possible to characterize the energy-time entanglement by observing the two photon absorption cross-sections in a known medium controlled by external conditions. In this paper, we analyze the correspondence between two photon absorption and projective measurements of the two photon wavefunction. It is shown that the two photon absorption process is described by a projection onto an energy-time entangled two photon state, indicating that the absorption cross-section can provide direct evidence of entanglement between the absorbed photon pairs.

Stationary States in Saturated Two-Photon Processes and Generation of Phase-Averaged Mixtures of Even and Odd Quantum States

V. V. Dodonov, Salomon Sylvain Mizrahi

We consider a relaxation of a single mode of the quantized field in a presence of one- and two-photon absorption and emission processes. Exact stationary solutions of the master equation for the diagonal elements of the density matrix in the Fock basis are found in the case of completely saturated two-photon emission. If two-photon processes dominate over single-photon ones, the stationary state is a mixture of phase averaged even and odd coherent states.

Dissipative dynamics for quantum spin systems on a lattice

We show that for a large class of interactions there exist translation-invariant dissipative dynamics which satisfy the detailed balance condition (in the associated noncommutative symmetric space), which do not commute with Hamiltonian dynamics and have exponential decay to equilibrium in the high-temperature region.
