Abstract

A recently presented eikonal treatment of nonlinear resonators is reformulated so as to enable a straightforward generalization to coupled resonators. A few coupled dispersively nonlinear resonator configurations are presented and analyzed. They exhibit novel types of multistability.

A recently presented eikonal treatment of nonlinear resonators and coupled resonators is generalized to enable the treatment of absorptive as well as dispersive optical bistability. The behavior of molecular media, incorporated in various types of resonators is emphasized.

Nonlinear complex eikonal approximation: Optical bistability in absorbing media

Meir Orenstein, Jacob Katriel, Shammai Speiser

A recently developed nonlinear complex eikonal approximation which was previously employed to the study of dispersively nonlinear resonators is applied to absorptively nonlinear resonator configurations. The nonlinear absorption is introduced phenomenologically, encompassing a large variety of intensity-dependent absorption mechanisms. Conditions for obtaining optical bistability are derived. Dynamically increasing absorption was not considered, and optical bistability in free propagation was not obtained.

Application of the Non-Linear Eikonal Treatment to the Design of Optical Bistable Devices

Recently we have developed [1,2] the non-1inear-complex-eikonal approximation. Our goal was to set a standard mathematical treatment for the analysis of the propagation of light waves through non-linear media. The linear eikonal approximation is a cornerstone for optical systems design and we hope that the non-linear eikonal method will gain some of the universality of its linear counterpart.

Dispersive tristability in microring resonators

Yannick Dumeige, Patrice Féron

Combining a transfer matrix analysis and slowly varying envelope approximation, we propose a simple method to describe steady states associated with dispersive multistability in coupled microring resonators. This approach allows us to consider nonlinear interactions between independent forward and backward propagative fields. We applied this simple formalism first to decrease the tristability intensity threshold in linearly coupled resonators and second to optically control the tristable behavior in a single microring resonator.
