A Model on Understanding Atomic Coherence in Lasing Without Inversion

Abstract

A laser model which may operate in the absence of population inversion is proposed. It is found that the realization of lasing without inversion in this model is due to the change of noninversion condition along with the creation of atomic coherence, instead of a coherence-term-induced gain enhancement.

Role of atomic coherence in lasing without inversion

Zhenfei Luo, Zhizhan Xu

A noninversion laser system which is closed lifetime broadened and free of the restriction on atomic decay rates is proposed. For the realization of lasing without inversion, the Rabi frequency of the applied field must exceed a lower threshold. Moreover, the coherence term in dressed states must enhance the gain. These results are obtained beyond the specific approximations.

Coherence and Decoherence Effects on Lasing with o without Population Inversion in a Four-level Atomic System

Gong Shang-Qing, Si-de Du, Li Ming Yuan +1 more

The effects of coherence and decoherence on lasing with or without population inversion in a fourlevel atomic system has been analyzed. It has shown that a change from a noninversion laser to a conventional inversion laser action can occur as the Rabi frequency of the driving field increases; another change from an inversion laser to a noninversion laser action can also occur due to the linewidth of the driving field.

Lasing without population inversion in an Er3+-doped YAG crystal

Mostafa Sahrai, Seyyed Hossein Asadpour, A. Eslami-Majd +1 more

Two atomic models are proposed for an Er3+-doped YAG crystal with application to lasing with and without population inversion. It is shown how an incoherent pumping field and coherent control coupling field can produce a laser in the presence and absence of population inversion.

Change from an inversion laser to a noninversion laser due to a phase-fluctuation effect

Shangqing Gong, Zhizhan Xu, Zhengquan Zhang +1 more

Lasing without or with population inversion in a simple three-level atomic system has been analyzed by taking into account the effect of phase fluctuations in the driving field. An interesting phenomenon has been found: When the driving field is not very intense, a change from inversion laser to noninversion laser behavior can occur as the driving field linewidth increases.

Lasers without inversion: A closed lifetime broadened system

A. Imamolu, J. E. Field, Stephen E. Harris

We show a model laser system which operates by an electromagnetically induced interference. Provided that an inversion condition for the thermal radiation field is satisfied, the system lases without atomic population inversion in steady state. The system is pumped by incoherent radiation on the transition on which lasing occurs.

Physical origin of the gain in a model of a laser without inversion

Heide Doss, Lorenzo M. Narducci, Marlan O. Scully +2 more

We consider a four-level atomic system with a degenerate or quasidegenerate ground-state doublet and two excited states. One of the upper levels is coupled to the ground doublet by a coherent field of variable strength, which we refer to as the Raman field, whose role is to create atomic coherence between the driven atomic states. The other higher lying state is coupled to the ground states when laser action develops. This model includes an incoherent pump mechanism to create some population in the top lasing state. In appropriate conditions, for the incoherent pump rate and the Raman field strength, the absorption profile of the laser transition develops gain features. We discuss the physical origin of this gain which we find to be the consequence of a population inversion between dressed atomic states. It is interesting to compare the results of this analysis with a similar study of a three-level lambda system which was previously recognized to yield lasing without inversion.1 In this case the appearance of gain can be attributed to the induced atomic coherence.
