Abstract

The effects of the relative phase between two laser beams on the propagation of a weak electromagnetic pulse are investigated in a V-type system with spontaneously generated coherence (SGC). Due to the relative phase, the subluminal and superluminal group velocity can be unified. Meanwhile, SGC can be regarded as a knob to manipulate light propagation between subluminal and superluminal.

SGC Switching Between Subluminal to Superluminal Propagation in V-Type Atom

Han Ding-An, Hong Wei Guo, Bai Yanfeng +2 more

For a V-type three-level atomic system with two closely spaced upper levels, we investigate the light pulse propagation properties with only one laser field. Due to spontaneously generated coherence, the group velocity of the light pulse can be changed from subluminal to superluminal. The effects of the field intensity and the two-upper level splitting on the group velocity are also shown. At last, an analytical expression for the group velocity is given in the case of a weak field.

Knob of the group velocity by the external field coupling two upper levels

Dingan Han, Yaguang Zeng, Yanfeng Bai +2 more

We investigate how the external field coupling the two upper levels produces a variety of effects on the propagation of a weak electromagnetic pulse in a V-type atomic system. Due to the upper level (UL) coupling field, the dispersion of the system has been influenced by the relative phase. Then, subluminal and superluminal phenomena can be unified. Thus, the external field and the relative phase can be regarded as switches to manipulate light propagation between subluminal and superluminal.

Comparative Study of Light Manipulation in Three-Level Systems Via Spontaneously Generated Coherence and Relative Phase of Laser Fields*

Nguyen Huy Bang, Le Nguyen Mai Anh, Nguyễn Tiến Dũng +1 more

Abstract We present a comparative study of the control of group velocity in three-level atomic systems including Λ-, Ladder-, and V-types via spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) and relative phase of laser fields. In the steady regime, expressions of group index are derived as an analytical function of controllable parameters related to SGC and relative phase. It is shown that the group velocity can be further slowed down or speeded up under SGC in which modifications of group velocity due to the SGC in Λ- and V-systems are stronger than that in Ladder-system. In particular, when interference strength of SGC p increases from 0.7 to 1.0, the light propagation is switched from superluminal to subluminal modes (for Λ- and Ladder-systems) or from subluminal to superluminal modes (for V-system). In the presence of relative phase, the group velocity changes between subluminal and superluminal modes with a period of 2π. In resonant region, the largest positive value of group index reaches at the relative phase φ = π while the largest negative value of group index reaches at φ = 0 and 2π for the Λ- and Ladder-systems, otherwise, for the V-system the largest positive group index occurs at φ = 0 and 2π, and the largest negative group index occurs at φ = π .

Manipulation role of the relative phase and incoherent pumping on a light pulse propagation

Cui Ni, Aiyun Li, Hui Ma +2 more

In an open / type system with the spontaneously generated coherence (SGC), when the probe and driving fields have different frequencies, the switching of the group velocity of the probe pulse from subluminal to superluminal is realized not only by adjusting values of the relative phase between the probe and driving fields but also by varying values of the incoherent pumping rate. For the subluminal propagation, the system always exhibits the probe absorption, however, the superluminal propagation is always companied with gain of the probe field.

Phase-Controlled Transparent Superluminal Light Propagation in a Doppler-Broadened Four-Level N-Type System

Lida Ebrahimi Zohravi, Majid Abedi, Mohammad Mahmoudi

The propagation of a weak probe field in a four-level N-type quantum system in the presence of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) is theoretically investigated. The optical properties of the system are studied and it is shown that the group velocity of light pulse can be controlled by relative phase of applied fields. By changing the relative phase of applied fields, the group velocity of light pulse changes from transparent subluminal to the transparent superluminal light propagation. Thus, the phase-controlled absorption-free superluminal light propagation is obtained without applying an incoherent laser fields to the system. The propagation of a weak probe light pulse is studied by solving the Maxwell's wave equation on numerical grid in space and time. Moreover, we study the third order self- and cross-Kerr susceptibility of probe field and calculate the nonlinear cross-phase shift for different values of intensity of applied fields. In addition, we take into account the effect of Doppler broadening on the light pulse propagation and it is found that a suitable choice of laser propagation directions allows us to preserve our results even in the presence of Doppler effect. It is demonstrated that by increasing the Doppler width of distribution to the room temperature, the dispersion changes from transparent subluminal to transparent superluminal light propagation which is our major motivation for this work.

Phase control of group velocity: From subluminal to superluminal light propagation

D. Bortman-Arbiv, A. D. Wilson‐Gordon, Harry Friedmann

We show that the group velocity of a weak pulse can be manipulated by controlling the phases of two weak optical fields applied to a V-shaped three-level system. Such control can even cause the probe propagation to change from subluminal to superluminal. We consider two schemes: in the first, the excited states are coupled by decay-induced coherence, which is an inherent property of the medium, and in the second, quantum coherence is created by coupling the excited states to each other by a strong microwave field. We also discuss the group velocity reduction experienced by a single weak propagating probe due to decay-induced coherence.
