Interaction-energy functional for lattice density functional theory: Applications to one-, two-, and three-dimensional Hubbard models

Román López-Sandoval, G. M. Pastor

The Hubbard model is investigated in the framework of lattice density functional theory (LDFT). The single-particle density matrix ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}}$ with respect to the lattice sites is considered as the basic variable of the many-body problem. A new approximation to the interaction-energy functional $W[\ensuremath{\gamma}]$ is proposed which is based on its scaling properties and which recovers exactly the limit of strong electron correlations at half-band filling. In this way, a more accurate description of W is obtained throughout the domain of representability of ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}},$ including the crossover from weak to strong correlations. As examples of applications results are given for the ground-state energy, charge-excitation gap, and charge susceptibility of the Hubbard model in one-, two-, and three-dimensional lattices. The performance of the method is demonstrated by comparison with available exact solutions, with numerical calculations, and with LDFT using a simpler dimer ansatz for W. Goals and limitations of the different approximations are discussed.

Interaction-energy functional of the Hubbard model: Local formulation and application to low-dimensional lattices

Matthieu Saubanère, Marie-Bernadette Lepetit, G. M. Pastor

The interaction energy $W[\ensuremath{\gamma}]$ of the Hubbard model is regarded as a functional of the single-particle density matrix $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ in the framework of lattice density-functional theory. The local character of the Hubbard interaction is exploited to express $W$ as a sum of local contributions ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{i}[\ensuremath{\gamma}]$, for which a simple semilocal scaling approximation is proposed. The method is applied to the ionic Hubbard model on one- and two-dimensional lattices with homogeneous and inhomogeneous Coulomb repulsions. Results are given for the kinetic and Coulomb energies, interatomic charge transfers, local magnetic moments, and charge gaps. Goals and limitations of the functional are discussed by comparison with exact results.

Application of many-body nonperturbative theories to the three-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

Junnian Xiong, Hui Li, Yingze Su +1 more

The attractive Fermi-Hubbard model stands out as a simple model for studying the pairing and superconductivity of fermions on a lattice. In this article, we apply several many-body theories in the three-dimensional attractive Hubbard model. Specifically, we compare the results of various GW methods with DQMC simulations and observe that they provide reliable results in the weak to intermediate coupling regime. The critical exponents also agree well with the accurate results obtained from the 3D XY model. In the superconducting phase, the post-GW method significantly improves the description of Green's functions and density of states. Additionally, we propose a method to determine the temperature at which the pseudogap appears.
