Nonideal lasers, nonclassical light, and deformed photon states

Abstract

We show that both super-Poissonian and sub-Poissonian photo statistics may be modeled by the use of the recently introduced M-type q-deformed coherent states, while P-type q-deformed coherent states exhibit nonclassical sub-Poissonian photon statistics. Applications to the characterization of the photon statistics of laser outputs reasonably close to threshold, single-atom resonance fluorescence, the micromaser field, and absorption by two-level atoms are considered.

Higher-order sub-Poissonian photon statistics in terms of factorial moments

Daniel B. Erenso, Reeta Vyas, Surendra Singh

We introduce the concept of higher-order super-Poissonian and sub-Poissonian statistics and show that higher-order sub-Poissonian statistics is a signature of a nonclassical field. Fields generated in intracavity second-harmonic generation and single-atom resonance fluorescence are shown to exhibit higher-order sub-Poissonian statistics.

Sub-Poissonian Photon Statistics and Squeezed Quantum States

L. Mandeļ

The statistical fluctuations of light can, under certain circumstances, exhibit a number of interesting nonclassical features. These include photon antibunching, sub-Poissonian statistics, and squeezing, all of which exist only in a quantum field. The three effects are distinct, and do not necessarily go together, although the first two are sometimes mistakenly treated as interchangeable. Both photon antibunching and sub-Poissonian statistics have been observed in experiments on resonance fluorescence from single atoms, which is described. Squeezing has not yet been seen experimentally, although many nonlinear processes are expected to give rise to it. The squeezed state can be recognized in heterodyne or homodyne experiments, where the squeezing becomes manifest as sub-Poissonian photon fluctuations.

Enhanced quantum phase estimation with q-deformed nonideal nonclassical light

Duttatreya Duttatreya, Sanjib Dey

Abstract q-deformed photon states arise from generalized oscillator algebras in which the standard bosonic commutation relations are modified by a deformation parameter q. They effectively model realistic nonideal photon statistics, including deviations such as sub- and super-Poissonian distributions. We investigate quantum phase estimation in a Mach–Zehnder interferometer using q-deformed photon states, including q-coherent and q-cat states, which model realistic deviations from ideal light sources. By deriving closed-form photon count likelihoods via the Jordan–Schwinger mapping, we compute the quantum and classical Fisher information and perform Bayesian inference on simulated detector data. Our results show that photon counting remains an optimal measurement strategy even for deformed states, with classical and quantum Fisher information in exact agreement. Furthermore, the phase sensitivity improves with increasing q-deformation, indicating enhanced metrological performance driven by nonclassical photon statistics. These findings highlight the utility of q-deformed states in quantum sensing.

Four-photon nonlinear coherent states

O. Abbasi, Akbar Jafari

We have introduced the notion of ‘four-photon nonlinear coherent states’ (FPNCSs) as right eigenstates of the fourth power of the generalized annihilation operator A4. It has been shown that there are four possible sets of such states which all can be expressed as the deformed Schrödinger cat type states derived from the superposition of four nonlinear coherent states (NCSs) which are π/2 out of phase. The nonclassical properties of the FPNCSs would be studied for two well-known quantum systems, a Kerr-like medium and a trapped laser-driven ion far from the Lamb-Dicke regime. We have found that the depth or the domain of the nonclassical features of FPNCSs in terms of sub-Poissonian photon statistics, higher order squeezing as well as amplitude-squared squeezing are higher than the corresponding standard states. Specifically, the proposed states in this paper exhibit sub-Poissonian statistics over an extensive range of real amplitudes which is in contrast with the lower level of sub-Poissonian characteristics of four-photon standard coherent states. Also the depth or domain of the nonclassical features of the FPNCSs can be modified by changing the magnitude of the nonlinearity parameters. Analysis of the quasi-probability distributions like Glauber–Sudarshan P-function, Husimi Q-function and Wigner distribution function verifies the nonclassical nature of the presented states. Studying the cavity field evolution in the interaction of a single two-level atom with an even NCS in the framework of f-deformed Jaynes-Cummings model shows that such a system can potentially be considered as a possible source for generating the proposed states.

Sub-Poissonian photon statistics of light in interaction of two-level atoms in superposed states with a single mode superposed coherent radiation

Rakesh Kumar Rai, Hari Prakash

We study sub-Poissonian photon statistics of light in interaction of a single mode radiation, initially either in a coherent state or in a superposed coherent state with an assembly of two-level atoms using the Hamiltonian, H = ω(a+a + Sz) + g(aS+ + a+ S–) in natural units, where a+ and a are creation and annihilation operators, Sz, S ± are the collective Dicke operators, g is the coupling constant, and ω is the energy of the photons and also the separation between the two atomic levels. We study the cases of (i) a single two-level and (ii) of two two-level atoms interacting with a single mode coherent or superposed coherent radiation. We find that for large coupling time gt, Fano factor shows collapses and revival phenomena, and that the variation is large for small mean number of photons. We also find that in the case of two two-level atoms, photon statistics shows larger sub-Poissonian than the case of a single two-level atom, and that there is no definite relationship between squeezing and sub-Poissonian photon statistics of light.

Non-Poisson photon statistics in an n-level (n = 2–4) laser above the threshold

A. V. Kozlovskiĭ, Anatolii N Oraevsky

A quantitative analysis is made of quantum fluctuations in the number of photons in the resonator of a single-mode laser considered in a quasi-linear approximation. An expression is obtained for a general four-level system, which is exact above the lasing threshold, but can also be used to calculate the fluctuations in the case of three- and two-level lasers. Above the threshold when certain relationships between the spontaneous decay constants are satisfied, the photon statistics are of the sub-Poisson type in four- and three-level systems. However, for other relationships between the decay constants, pumping rate, and average number of photons, fluctuations in the resonator obey both the Poisson and super-Poisson statistics with variances much greater than the average number of photons. Both Poisson and super-Poisson statistics with large values of the variance are found for a two-level system. The results of calculations indicate that, in general, there is no coherent Glauber state of the field in a laser resonator when the threshold is significantly exceeded.
