It is shown that there exists a generalized Heisenberg model of half-odd-integral spin S greater than 1/2 corresponding to the model of spin 1/2, and we have exactly solved models of half-odd-integral spin S greater than 1/2 corresponding to exactly solved models of spin 1/2.
The diagrammatical approach to the exact solution of two-dimensional Ising model, developed for the system with spin 1/2 and 1, is extended to be applicable to the Ising model of spin S greater than 1/2. The exact solution for the system on the square lattice and other lattices with non-crossing interactions is obtained only when the spin is half an odd integer, and the interaction between two spins s j and s k is expressed as - J j k φ j ( s j )φ k ( s k ) in terms of one paramater J j k and odd functions φ j ( s ) and φ k ( s ) of s satisfying |φ j ( s )|=|φ k ( s )|=1 for s =- S , - S +1,· ··, and S . The exact solution on the honeycomb lattice is obtained for all S , for the cases when the interactions divided by the temperature are expressed in terms of S +1/2 or S parameters.
Ground state properties of finite anisotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains are studied for odd half-integer spins S= 1 / 2 , 3 / 2 ... as well as integer spins S=1, 2 .... Finite size scaling analysis of the results clearly distinguishes the half-integer (S= 1 / 2 , 3 / 2 ) from the integer (S=1) spin situation. It gives strong support to a recent conjecture which postulates that the T=0 phase structure is very different in the two cases. According to this idea there exists a new phase between the planar and the antiferromagnetic region, for integer spins only. This phase, which includes the isotropic point, has a finite energy gap and no long range order.
We present the exact solution of a family of two-spins models. The models are solved by the algebraic Bethe ansatz method using the gl(2)-invariant R-matrix and a multi-spins Lax operator. The interactions are by the Heisenberg spins exchange. We are also considering magnetic B-fields and a term for Haldane single spin anisotropy.
The well known Haldane map from spin chains into the O(3) nonlinear sigma model is generalized to the case of spin ladders. This map allows us to explain the different qualitative behaviour between even and odd ladders, in exactly the same way as it explains the difference between integer and half-integer spin chains. Namely, for even ladders the topological term in the sigma model action is absent, while for odd ladders the parameter, which multiplies the topological term, is equal to , where S is the spin of the ladder. Hence even ladders should have a dynamically generated spin gap, while odd ladders with half-integer spin should stay gapless and physically equivalent to a perturbed Wess - Zumino - Witten model in the infrared regime. We also derive some consequences from the dependence of the sigma model coupling constant on the ladder Heisenberg couplings constants.
