Abstract

Irreversible logic circuits dissipate heat for every bit of information that is lost. Information is lost when the input vector can not be uniquely recovered from the output vector. Theoretically reversible logic dissipates zero power since the input vector of reversible circuit can be uniquely recovered from the output vector. Reversible computation has applications in digital signal processing, low power CMOS design, DNA computing and quantum computing. This study presents an overview of the well-known reversible gates and discuss about their quantum implementation. A new PFAG gate and its quantum implementation are presented. Finally, this study proposes a novel low cost quantum realization of reversible multiplier circuit and compares its superiority with the existing counterparts

Reversible logic circuits have received significant attention in quantum computing, low power CMOS design, optical information processing, DNA computing, bioinformatics, and nanotechnology. This paper presents two new 4 × 4 bit reversible multiplier designs which have lower hardware complexity, less garbage bits, less quantum cost and less constant inputs than previous ones, and can be generalized to construct efficient reversible n × n bit multipliers. An implementation of reversible HNG is also presented. This implementation shows that the full adder design using HNG is one of the best designs in term of quantum cost. An implementation of MKG is also presented in order to have a fair comparison between our proposed reversible multiplier designs and the existing counterparts. The proposed reversible multipliers are optimized in terms of quantum cost, number of constant inputs, number of garbage outputs and hardware complexity. They can be used to construct more complex systems in nanotechnology.

A Review on Reversible Logic Gates and their Implementation

Raghava Garipelly, P. Madhu Kiran, A. Santhosh Kumar

Abstract — Reversible logic is one of the most vital issue at present time and it has different areas for its application, those are low power CMOS, quantum computing, nanotechnology, cryptography, optical computing, DNA computing, digital signal processing (DSP), quantum dot cellular automata, communication, computer graphics. It is not possible to realize quantum computing without implementation of reversible logic. The main purposes of designing reversible logic are to decrease quantum cost, depth of the circuits and the number of garbage outputs. This paper provides the basic reversible logic gates, which in designing of more complex system having reversible circuits as a primitive component and which can execute more complicated operations using quantum computers. The reversible circuits form the basic building block of quantum computers as all quantum operations are reversible. This paper presents the data relating to the primitive reversible gates which are available in literature and helps researches in designing higher complex computing circuits using reversible gates.

Low power quantum gates for the implementation of reversible memory elements using quantum dot cellular automata

Samyukta A Hassan, Preeta Sharan

Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed but it can be conserved. The processors of present day computers are designed using conventional logic circuits which are irreversible in nature. They suffer from loss of information during computation, leading to energy dissipation in the form of heat affecting the performance and life of the circuits. These limitations of conventional logic circuits can be overcome by the reversible logic circuits designed using quantum gates, the essential elements for quantum computing. Quantum computing is an emerging area of research which finds application in optical computing, DNA computing, cryptography, low power CMOS design, digital signal processing and nanotechnology.

A Survey on Reversible Logic Gates

Santosh Rani, Amandeep Singh Bhandari

Nowadays, reversible computing is more fascinative research area to curtail power dissipation in comparison of conventional computing. In conventional computing, logic circuit dissipates more power by losing bits of information. Reversible computing recovers from losing bits of information through same number of output vector from same number of input vector and thus decreases the power dissipation. Since there are different cost considerations such as garbage outputs, gate count, quantum cost methods for specific cost reductions may be established.

Reversible logic

W. David Pan, M. Nalasani

This work presents the logical reversibility. The inputs and outputs of reversible logic gates can be uniquely retrievable from each other. The reversible logic operations can't erase information and dissipate zero heat. The circuit actually operates in a backward operation, allows reproducing the inputs from the outputs and consumes zero power. As the basic elements of any logic circuit, logic gates are used to realize Boolean functions. By combining reversible logic gates, reversible circuits can perform complex logical and arithmetic operations. A one-to-one mapping between inputs and outputs is realized. The logical operations run backwards by cascading a reversible logic gate with its dual (inverse). Reversible circuits are also called lossless circuits, as there is neither energy loss nor information loss. These circuits are very attractive for applications where extremely low power consumption, or heat dissipation, is desirable in areas ranging from communications, low power VLSI (very large-scale integration) technology, optical computing to nanotechnology. Reversible logic found to be very useful in quantum computing where the quantum evolution is inherently reversible.
