Abstract

We demonstrated coupling of rare-earth-metal ions in a crystal to a macroscopic cavity mode by observing optical bistability and normal-mode peaks due to sweeping-laser-induced population redistribution of the ions. The experimentally evaluated coupling constant between the individual ions and the single cavity mode is $15\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kHz}$, which is comparable with or larger than the dissipation of the ions and will exceed the cavity dissipation with a narrowing of the mode waist of the cavity to the wavelength. The results advance the application of a coupled system of rare-earth-metal ions in a crystal and an optical cavity for quantum information processing.

Coherent spectroscopy of rare-earth-metal-ion-doped whispering-gallery-mode resonators

D. L. McAuslan, Dmitry Korystov, Jevon J. Longdell

We perform an investigation into the properties of Pr${}^{3+}$:Y${}_{2}$SiO${}_{5}$ whispering-gallery-mode resonators as a first step toward achieving the strong coupling regime of cavity QED with rare-earth-metal-ion-doped crystals. Direct measurement of cavity QED parameters are made using photon echoes, giving good agreement with theoretical predictions. By comparing the ions at the surface of the resonator to those in the center, it is determined that the physical process of making the resonator does not negatively affect the properties of the ions. Coupling between the ions and resonator is analyzed through the observation of optical bistability and normal-mode splitting.

Three orders of magnitude cavity-linewidth narrowing by slow light in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal cavity

Mahmood Sabooni, Qian Li, Lars Rippe +1 more

Three orders of magnitude cavity-linewidth narrowing in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal cavity, induced by strong intra-cavity dispersion caused by off-resonant interaction with dopant ions is demonstrated. The strong dispersion is created by semi-permanent but rapidly reprogrammable changes of the rare earth absorption profiles using optical pumping techniques. Several cavity modes are shown within the spectral transmission window. Potential applications are discussed.

Nanophotonic coherent light–matter interfaces based on rare-earth-doped crystals

Tian Zhong, Jonathan M. Kindem, Evan Miyazono +1 more

Quantum light-matter interfaces connecting stationary qubits to photons will enable optical networks for quantum communications, precise global time keeping, photon switching and studies of fundamental physics. Rare-earth-ion-doped crystals are state-of-the-art materials for optical quantum memories and quantum transducers between optical photons, microwave photons and spin waves. Here we demonstrate coupling of an ensemble of neodymium rare-earth-ions to photonic nanocavities fabricated in the yttrium orthosilicate host crystal. Cavity quantum electrodynamics effects including Purcell enhancement (F=42) and dipole-induced transparency are observed on the highly coherent (4)I(9/2)-(4)F(3/2) optical transition. Fluctuations in the cavity transmission due to statistical fine structure of the atomic density are measured, indicating operation at the quantum level. Coherent optical control of cavity-coupled rare-earth ions is performed via photon echoes. Long optical coherence times (T2∼100 μs) and small inhomogeneous broadening are measured for the cavity-coupled rare-earth ions, thus demonstrating their potential for on-chip scalable quantum light-matter interfaces.
