A soluble one dimensional model of an interacting Fermi gas. I

Abstract

The authors study a one dimensional model system of fermions which proves to be exactly soluble in the thermodynamic limit. It is shown that the thermodynamic functions for the model system are the same as for a system of noninteracting fermions in a harmonic oscillator well. As a special case of the model system, with a particular choice for the coupling constant, it reduces to a particular two-species system of fermions interacting via pairwise harmonic forces. For this case of the two-species system the free energy per particle, the pressure the specific heat at constant volume, and the isothermal compressibility are calculated in the canonical ensemble in closed form. It is shown that this system does not undergo a phase transition.

Thermodynamics and occupation numbers of a Fermi gas in the canonical ensemble

Kurt Schönhammer

Exact results for the thermodynamic properties and mean occupation numbers of a system of noninteracting fermions with equidistant level spacing are presented for an arbitrary number of particles. It is discussed quantitatively how the results converge to the corresponding ones in the grand canonical ensemble when the thermodynamic limit is reached. From the simple calculations it also follows that the thermodynamics of an infinite two-dimensional electron gas is identical to that of a one-dimensional harmonic chain with linearized dispersion. The results generalize and simplify previous approaches to this model published in this journal.

Thermodynamic properties of an anharmonic fermionic oscillator

S. M. de Souza, S. Moss de Oliveira, M. T. Thomaz

An exactly soluble fermionic system (anharmonic oscillator) is presented. Exact expressions for average quantities such as the number of particles, energy, and magnetization of an ensemble of quantum systems in equilibrium with a reservoir of particles and heat are derived. Critical curves of the average magnetization as a function of temperature are obtained for a lattice of interacting anharmonic oscillators within the mean field approximation. To clarify the role played by the parameters of the present model, the Ising model is studied as a limiting case.

Two-component Fermi gas in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

Gao Xianlong, W. Wonneberger

A many-body theory for a two-component system of spin-polarized interacting fermions in a one-dimensional harmonic trap is developed. The model considers two different states of the same fermionic species and treats the dominant interactions between the two using the bosonization method for forward scattering. Asymptotically exact results for the one-particle matrix elements at zero temperature are given. Using them, occupation probabilities of oscillator states are discussed. Particle and momentum densities are calculated and displayed. It is demonstrated how interactions modify all these quantities. An asymptotic connection with Luttinger liquids is suggested. The relation of the coupling constant of the theory to the dipole-dipole interaction is also discussed.

Soluble model of many interacting quantum particles in a trap

Magdalena A. Załuska–Kotur, Mariusz Gajda, Arkadiusz Orłowski +1 more

Exact solutions to many-body interacting systems of both bosonic and fermionic particles confined to harmonic potential in an arbitrary number of dimensions are given. Energy levels and their degeneracies for trapped identical particles interacting via harmonic forces are calculated. This specific form of the interaction allows for analytical solutions. The mutual interaction, attractive or repulsive, modifies significantly the properties of the considered system. For a large number of particles the interaction essentially results in a frequency shift. Statistical properties (e.g., microcanonical and grand canonical partition functions) as well as some illustrative, physically relevant examples are discussed. Our results give an unusual opportunity for further studies of interacting systems in the framework of the exactly soluble model.

Thermodynamics of the Fermi Gas in a Quantum Well

Yu. M. Poluéktov, A. A. Soroka

For the ideal Fermi gas that fills a quantum well confined by two parallel planes, there are calculated the thermodynamic characteristics in general form for arbitrary temperatures, namely: the thermodynamic potential, energy, entropy, equations of state, heat capacities and compressibilities. The distance between planes is considered as an additional thermodynamic variable. Owing to the anisotropy, the pressure of the Fermi gas along and transverse to the planes is different, so that the system is characterized by two equations of state and a set of different heat capacities. Limiting cases of low and high temperatures are considered. The temperature dependencies of the entropy and heat capacities at low temperatures remain linear, just as in the volume case, and their dependencies on the chemical potential and density undergo jumps at the beginning of the filling of new discrete levels. It is shown that the behavior of thermodynamic quantities with the distance between plates can be either oscillating or monotonic, depending on what quantity is assumed to be fixed: the volume or surface density. For high temperatures the corrections to thermodynamic quantities are obtained, which are proportional to the ratio of the thermal de Broglie wavelength to the distance between planes.

Exactly soluble model of two-dimensional interacting fermions in a uniform magnetic field

Erik C. Sowa, L. M. Falicov

The spectrum of a Hamiltonian for $N$ harmonically interacting two-dimensional particles in a constant perpendicular magnetic field is determined exactly by the transformation to normal coordinates. The energy of the ground state consistent with Fermi-Dirac statistics is calculated in the limit of a strong magnetic field. The Fermi energy is found to exhibit de Haas---van Alphen---like oscillations.
