Two-dimensional Hubbard model with strong electron repulsion

Abstract

The two-dimensional Hubbard model is studied in the limit u/t\ensuremath{\gg}1. It is shown that almost all phase transitions are first-order transitions with a metastable-state lifetime depending discontinuously on the external parameters. The phase transition from the ferromagnetic to the ferrimagnetic state in a strong magnetic field is an exception: It is a second-order transition in a model with a half-filled electron band and it is a weakly-first-order transition in a model with a nearly-half-filled electron band. In the latter case the superconductive state is formed.

Three-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model

Alexei Sherman

The three-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model is investigated using the strong-coupling diagram technique. For half-filling, the boundary between paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic states is determined for the range of the Hubbard repulsion $4t\leq U\leq12t$, where $t$ is the hopping integral between neighboring sites. Along this boundary, the density of states is calculated, and it demonstrates the Mott transition at $U\approx9t$. For $U\geq6t$ and half-filling, the density of states has the shape inherent in the strong electron repulsion, while for $U=4t$, its shape points to weak coupling. The dependence of the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ on the electron concentration $\bar{n}$ is investigated for the cases $U=4t$ and $12t$. In the former case, $T_{\rm N}$ decreases monotonously with $\bar{n}$, while in the latter case, there is a plateau in the dependence near $\bar{n}=0.87$. The plateau is connected to a reconstruction of the density of states caused by an effective weakening of electron coupling due to electron depopulation. For $U=12t$ and half-filling, the magnetic critical exponent $γ\approx1.4$, which is close to the value in the Heisenberg model. Some features resembling the first-order phase transition, revealing themselves in a finite crystal, are discussed.

Phase transitions and exact ground-state properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard model in a magnetic field

Chia‐Wei Yang, ARMEN N. KOCHARIAN, Y. L. Chiang

The exact phase diagrams of the one-dimensional Hubbard model, both attractive and repulsive, in the presence of an arbitrary magnetic field h for various electron concentrations n and on-site interaction strengths U <0 or U >0 are calculated and investigated. The exact ground-state properties, namely, the ground-state energy, the average spin (magnetization), the concentration of the doubly occupied sites, the kinetic energy, the chemical potential, the spin (magnetic) susceptibility and the charge compressibility, are calculated and examined over a wide range of interaction strengths U for various h and n . It is found that the spin susceptibility at half-filling is non-analytic and changes discontinuously as U →0. The exact theory shows the absence of a charge energy gap in the U ⩽0 region for all n and provides, for the chemical potential, the rigorous upper and lower bounds for half-filled and empty bands respectively. The analytical results derived for the weak-coupling limit and asymptotic expansions for strong coupling are in full agreement with the numerical calculations.

On the Magnetic and Metal-Insulator Transitions in a Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

Hisashi Kondo, Tôru Moriya

Antiferromagnetic and metal to insulator transitions in the ground state of two-dimensional half-filled and nearly half-filled Hubbard models with the nearest neighbor and the second nearest neighbor transfers (- t and t ′ , respectively) are studied by using the Green's function approach with the self-energy up to the second order in the coupling constant U . For a choice of the parameter value t ′ / t =0.2 the half-filled model undergoes the first order phase transition between paramagnetic metallic (PM) phase and antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) phase at U / t =4.0 while the first order transition between PM and antiferromagnetic metallic (AFM) phases takes place for nearly half-filled band. The one-electron spectral density is calculated for the PM, AFM, and AFI phases near the phase boundaries. In the PM phase the quasi-particle dispersion indicates the band narrowing from the Hartree-Fock results and the flat band behavior as was indicated by previous stadies and was observed in high- T c cuprates. The quasi-particle dispersion in the AFM phase is seen to be close to the Hartree-Fock results.

Two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping

H. Q. Lin, J. E. Hirsch

We study the magnetic properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor (t) and next-nearest-neighbor (${t}_{2}$) hopping and on-site repulsion U. We first calculate the mean-field phase diagram as a function of band filling and U. Because of the Van Hove singularity in the density of states, we find a ferromagnetic phase extending to zero U for certain band filling. For the half-filled band case, antiferromagnetism sets in at a finite value of U if ${t}_{2}$\ensuremath{\ne}0. We study the behavior of spin-spin correlation functions for small lattices of up to N=64 atoms using Monte Carlo simulations, as well as exact diagonalization for N=4. Our results show enhanced ferromagnetic correlations in some regions, but apparently no ferromagnetic long-range order. In the half-filled case, our numerical results are consistent with a nonzero critical U. For a non-half-filled band our results suggest that there is no long-range order.

Ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with orbital degeneracy: From low to high electron density

Harumi Sakamoto, Tsutomu Momoi, Kenn Kubo

We studied ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with doubly degenerate atomic orbitals by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method and obtained the ground-state phase diagrams. It was found that ferromagnetism is stable from low to high $(0<n<1.75)$ electron density when the interactions are sufficiently strong. The quasi-long-range order of triplet superconductivity coexists with the ferromagnetic order for a strong Hund coupling region, where the interorbital interaction ${U}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{-}J$ is attractive. At quarter-filling $(n=1),$ the insulating ferromagnetic state appears, accompanying orbital quasi-long-range order. For low densities $(n<1),$ ferromagnetism occurs owing to the ferromagnetic exchange interaction caused by virtual hoppings of electrons, the same as in the quarter-filled system. This comes from separation of the charge and spin-orbital degrees of freedom in the strong-coupling limit. This ferromagnetism is fragile against variation of band structure. For high densities $(n>1),$ the phase diagram of the ferromagnetic phase is similar to that obtained in infinite dimensions. In this case, the double exchange mechanism is operative for stabilizing the ferromagnetic order and this long-range order is robust against variation of the band dispersion. A partially polarized state appears in the density region $1.68\ensuremath{\lesssim}n\ensuremath{\lesssim}1.75$ and phase separation occurs for n just below the half-filling $(n=2).$

Numerical study of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Steven R. White, Douglas J. Scalapino, Robert L. Sugar +3 more

We report on a numerical study of the two-dimensional Hubbard model and describe two new algorithms for the simulation of many-electron systems. These algorithms allow one to carry out simulations within the grand canonical ensemble at significantly lower temperatures than had previously been obtained and to calculate ground-state properties with fixed numbers of electrons. We present results for the two-dimensional Hubbard model with half- and quarter-filled bands. Our results support the existence of long-range antiferromagnetic order in the ground state at half-filling and its absence at quarter-filling. Results for the magnetic susceptibility and the momentum occupation along with an upper bound to the spin-wave spectrum are given. We find evidence for an attractive effective d-wave pairing interaction near half-filling but have not found evidence for a phase transition to a superconducting state.
