Abstract

The dynamics of an open quantum system, consisting of three superconducting qubits interacting with independent reservoirs, is investigated to elucidate the effects of the environment on a unitary generation scheme of W states (Migliore R et al 2006 Phys. Rev. B 74 104503 ). To this end a microscopic master equation is constructed and its exact resolution predicts the generation of a Werner-like state instead of the W state. A comparison between our model and a more intuitive phenomenological model is also considered, in order to find the limits of the latter approach in the case of structured reservoirs.

GHZ state generation of three Josephson qubits in the presence of bosonic baths

S Spilla, Rosanna Migliore, M Scala +1 more

We analyze an entangling protocol to generate tripartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states in a system consisting of three superconducting qubits with pairwise coupling. The dynamics of the open quantum system is investigated by taking into account the interaction of each qubit with an independent bosonic bath with an ohmic spectral structure. To this end a microscopic master equation is constructed and exactly solved. We find that the protocol here discussed is stable against decoherence and dissipation due to the presence of the external baths.

Dynamics of a system of two coupled quibts in interaction with a thermal bath: A comparative study using different models for the system-bath interaction

G. L. Deçordi, A. Vidiella-Barranco

We investigate a system of two interacting qubits having one of them isolated and the other coupled to a thermal reservoir. We consider two different models of system-reservoir interaction: i) a model, in which the master equation is derived taking into account the interaction between the two subsystems (qubits), ii) a naive model, in which the master equation consists of a dissipative term added to the unitary evolution term. We study the dynamics of quantities such as bipartite entanglement, quantum discord and the linear entropy of the isolated qubit for both strong and weak coupling regimes (qubit-qubit interaction) as well as for different temperatures of the reservoir. We find significant disagreements between the results obtained from the two models even in the weak coupling regime. For instance, we show that according to the phenomenological model, the isolated qubit would approach a maximally mixed state more slowly for higher temperatures (unphysical result), while the microscopic model predicts the opposite behaviour (correct result).

Quantum coherence in a mesoscopic Josephson junction with dissipation

Jian Zou, Bin Shao

A mesoscopic Josephson junction in a superconducting ring enclosing a magnetostatic flux with dissipation is considered. The dissipation in this system is described as a consequence of its coupling to a reservoir. By solving the master equation it is shown that the state of the junction can evolve into a quantum superposition of two coherent states even when the dissipation is present. It is also shown that squeezing effects can exist in such a system, and the dynamic behavior of the supercurrent shows collapse and revival phenomena. The quantum decoherence is also discussed.

Dissipation and entanglement dynamics for two interacting qubits coupled to independent reservoirs

M Scala, Rosanna Migliore, A Messina

We derive the master equation of a system of two coupled qubits by taking into account their interaction with two independent bosonic baths. Important features of the dynamics are brought to light, such as the structure of the stationary state at general temperatures and the behaviour of the entanglement at zero temperature, showing the phenomena of sudden death and sudden birth as well as the presence of stationary entanglement for long times. The model here presented is quite versatile and can be of interest in the study of both Josephson junction architectures and cavity-QED.

Master equation for dissipative interacting qubits in a common environment

Jader P. Santos, F. L. Semião

In this paper, we derive a microscopic master equation for a pair of $XY$-coupled two-level systems interacting with the same memoryless reservoir. In particular, we apply this master equation to the case of a pair of two-level atoms in free space where we can clearly contrast the predictions made with the microscopic master equation obtained here and the phenomenological approaches where the atom-atom coupling is included just a posteriori, i.e., not taking into account in the derivation of the open system equation of motion. We show, for instance, that the phenomenological approach fails completely in the assessment of the role played by the symmetric and antisymmetric decay channels. As a consequence, the predictions related to collective effects such as superradiance, for instance, are misleading in the phenomenological approach. We also obtain the fluorescence spectrum using the microscopic model developed here.
