Nonlinear optics at maximum coherence

Abstract

We describe nonlinear optical processes which utilize maximum coherence of a non–allowed transition. The nonlinear susceptibility for such processes is of the same order of magnitude as is the linear susceptibility. This allows frequency converters and optical parametric oscillators with bandwidths which are on order of their centre frequency.

Nonlinear optics at maximum coherence

We describe nonlinear optical processes in a medium with maximal coherence on a Raman transition. The nonlinear polarization of such a medium is of the same order of magnitude as the linear polarization. This allows efficient frequency conversion and generation of a wide spectrum of Raman sidebands. The phase of the coherence can be controlled through a small two-photon detuning from the Raman resonance. An appropriate choice of the phase improves nonlinear generation and propagation of sidebands through an inhomogeneous gaseous medium.

Nonlinear Optical Processes Using Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Stephen E. Harris, J.E. Field, Ataç İmamoğlu

It is well known by those practicing the techniques of nonlinear optics, that the power which may be generated in a frequency summing process, or the gain which may be obtained in a parametric process are determined by the interplay of the nonlinear and linear susceptibilities. In general, as an atomic transition to the ground state is approached, the nonlinear susceptibility is resonantly enhanced, but at the same time the media exhibits a rapidly increasing refractive index and becomes opaque.

Optical parametric oscillators pumped by population-trapped atoms

Stephen E. Harris, Maneesh Jain

We describe an optical parametric oscillator that is pumped by population-trapped atoms that are prepared with maximum coherence. The oscillator is based on the use of an effective nonlinear susceptibility that is of the same order as the linear susceptibility. Because the parametric gain is obtained in a single coherence length, the gain bandwidth can exceed the degenerate frequency. In Pb vapor the calculated gain is maximized at 1.88 microm and has a bandwidth of ~7500 cm(-1).

Nonlinear optical processes using electromagnetically induced transparency

Stephen E. Harris, J. E. Field, Ataç İmamoğlu

We show that by applying a strong-coupling field between a metastable state and the upper state of an allowed transition to ground one may obtain a resonantly enhanced third-order susceptibility while at the same time inducing transparency of the media. An improvement in conversion efficiency and parametric gain, as compared to weak-coupling field behavior, of many orders of magnitude is predicted.
