Abstract

The behaviour of a V -type three-level atomic system in a ring cavity driven by a coherent field is studied. We consider a V configuration under conditions such that interference between decay channels is important. We find that when quantum interference is taken into account, optical bistability can be realized with a considerable decrease in the threshold intensity and the cooperative parameter. On the other hand, we also include the finite bandwidth of the driving field and study its role in the optical bistable response. It is found that at certain linewidths of the driving field optical bistability is obtained even if the system satisfies the trapping condition and the threshold intensity can be controlled. Furthermore, a change from the optical bistability due to quantum interference to the usual bistable behaviour based on saturation occurs as the driving field linewidth increases.

Optical bistability via quantum interference in a four-level atomic medium

Xin‐You Lü, Jiahua Li, Ji-Bing Liu +1 more

We theoretically investigate optical bistability (OB) behaviour in a four-level atomic system confined in a unidirectional ring cavity. It is shown that OB can be controlled by adjusting the intensity of the coupling field and the value of the cooperativity parameter. More importantly, our numerical results show that the threshold intensity of OB can be reduced without decreasing the range of the hysteresis loop via adjusting the effect of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) or the relative phase between two applied fields. The influence of the frequency detuning of the coupling field on the OB behaviour is also discussed.

THE EFFECT OF DECAY-INDUCED INTERFERENCE ON THE PHASE CONTROL OF THE OPTICAL BISTABILITY (OB)

Mostafa Sahrai, Reza Kheradmand, N. SALAHSHOUR +1 more

This paper studies the optical bistability in a degenerate three-level Λ-type atomic system in a unidirectional optical ring cavity. The effect of quantum interference on the phase control of the optical bistabilty is then discussed. It is shown that the optical bistability changes with the intensity of coupling and the rate of an incoherent pumping field. The possibility of creating an optical multistability (OM) by the intensity of coupling field relative phase between the applied fields, and the rate of an incoherent pump field has also been discussed.

OPTICAL BISTABILITY VIA INCOHERENT PUMPING FIELDS IN SEMICONDUCTOR QUANTUM WELLS

HUI WANG, Hongtao Zhang, Zhiping Wang

Under the non-resonant condition, we investigated the optical bistability (OB) in a three-level quantum well system inside a unidirectional ring cavity. We find that the incoherent pumping fields and the quantum interference induced by incoherent pumping fields can affect the optical bistability dramatically, which can be used to manipulate efficiently the threshold intensity and the hysteresis loop. These results are achieved by applying the two incoherent pumping fields, so they are very different from the conventional schemes that coherent driving fields are used to control the optical bistability. Thus, it may provide some new possibilities for technological applications in optoelectronics and solid-state quantum information science.

Effect of quantum interference on optical bistability in the three-level V-type atomic system

Amitabh Joshi, Wenge Yang, Min Xiao

The phenomenon of optical bistability is studied for the three-level atomic system in V-configuration confined in a unidirectional optical ring cavity, and the effects of quantum interference and coupling field are investigated. The possibility of obtaining optical multistability in the system by controlling quantum interference and coupling field strength is also discussed.

Multi-Parameter Control of Optical Bistability–Multistability Switching in a Four-Level N-Type Atomic System via Quantum Interference

A. M. Awad, Mohamed I. Nouh, Emad Abdel-Salam

Abstract This work presents a theoretical study of optical bistability (OB) and multistability (OM) in a four-level N-type atomic system embedded in a unidirectional ring cavity, with particular attention to the role of quantum interference (QI) between decay channels. Going beyond earlier reports that focused on single-parameter or cavity-based control without considering quantum interference or multistability, we develop a unified framework investigating how the cooperative parameter C, probe and control field detunings (Δ₂, Δ₃), non-radiative decay rates (γ₀, γ₀₀), quantum interference (P), pump/control Rabi frequencies (Ω₁, Ω₂), and relative phase (φ) collectively govern OB and OM thresholds. Systematic analysis reveals that increasing C broadens hysteresis loops and raises thresholds, thereby enhancing switching stability, while quantum interference significantly lowers the OB threshold, enabling bistability at lower input intensities. Non-radiative decay rates γ₀ and γ₀₀, pump/control Rabi frequencies, and the relative phase φ further provide flexible switching between bistable and multistable regimes. Notably, we demonstrate that OB ↔ OM transitions can be induced through multiple independent pathways beyond phase control alone—including tuning of the cooperative parameter, non-radiative decay rates, and pump/control field intensities—extending the phase-driven switching mechanism established in earlier N-type studies to a broader, multi-parameter control framework. Furthermore, probe and control field detunings (Δ₂, Δ₃) enable dynamic tuning of the system's dispersive and absorptive properties, offering additional control over threshold behavior. These results identify practical routes for designing reconfigurable optical memory, quantum information processors, and all-optical switching devices with enhanced controllability.
