Saturation of two-level atoms in chaotic fields

Abstract

Exact solutions are presented for the equations describing the stationary population of a two-level atom in a nonmonochromatic ideal chaotic field. The dependence of the excited-state population on the Rabi frequency, bandwidth of the field, spontaneous decay, and detuning is studied and compared with the results obtained for phase-diffusing laser light. The validity of the decorrelation approximation is also investigated.

Exact results on light scattered from atoms pumped by coherent and chaotic fields of arbitrary bandwidth

Gautam Vemuri, Rajarshi Roy, G. S. Agarwal

The dynamical behavior of an atom interacting with a coherent field and a chaotic field is studied. Monte Carlo methods are used to integrate the equations describing the dipole moment, population inversion, and two-time correlation functions. The chaotic field can have a finite correlation time. Numerical results for a wide range of the parameters are given. The results depend sensitively on the ratio of the Rabi frequency and the bandwidth of the chaotic field. It is shown how an intense coherent field can suppress the effects of incoherence. The intensity of fluorescence as a function of detuning exhibits narrowing as the strength of the coherent field increases.

Optical Bloch Equations for a Two-Level Atom Revisited: Analytical Solutions

Heung‐Ryoul Noh

We present a comprehensive analytical study of the optical Bloch equations for a closed two-level atom. We obtain a map in phase space of the Rabi frequency and the laser frequency detuning, discriminating the characteristics of solutions to the optical Bloch equations separated by a boundary in phase space. Outside the boundary, oscillatory behavior is shown, while simple decaying behavior is shown inside the boundary. The behavior of the solutions is also found to be dependent on the relative magnitude of the decay rates of the optical coherence and the excited state population.

Ionization Characteristics of Three-Level Atoms by Nonmonochromatic Lasers

Kazuyuki KATOH, Shuichi Hasegawa, Atsuyuki Suzuki

Ionization characteristics of two-step excitation by two intense nonmonochromatic (finite bandwidth) lasers are investigated. By approximating the laser fields by a stochastic model of a chaotic field, the stochastic atomic-density-matrix equations for three-level atoms are first obtained. Comparing with the analytical solution, the accuracy of our model is confirmed. By using this model, the ionization characteristics are studied in detail as a function of laser bandwidth. The dependence of laser bandwidth on the Doppler averaged ionization probability is also investigated.

Comparative study of four-wave mixing in chaotic and phase-diffusing fields

G. S. Agarwal, Gautam Vemuri, C. V. Kunasz +1 more

We consider the dependence of the four-wave-mixing signal from an ensemble of homogeneously broadened, two-level atoms on the statistics of the pump field. Two models for the pump field are considered: the chaotic field and the phase-diffusing field. A Monte Carlo simulation procedure is used to integrate the equations describing the four-wave-mixing process numerically. This technique allows consideration of arbitrary bandwidths for the pump and incorporates pump-induced saturation effects. Results are presented for the strength of the four-wave-mixing signal as a function of the pump intensity for both resonant and off-resonant cases. It is shown that the four-wave-mixing signal is sensitive to the statistics of the pump, particularly for strong fields.

Fluctuations in fluorescence from an ensemble of two-level atoms pumped simultaneously by a coherent and a chaotic field

Gautam Vemuri, G. S. Agarwal

We use a recently developed model for the interaction of a two-level atom with a coherent and a chaotic field of arbitrary bandwidth to study population fluctuations induced by the chaotic pump. We report numerical results for the fluctuations in the intensity of the fluorescence and their power spectra. We also give results for the effect of field fluctuations on the macroscopic polarization produced by the atoms. We show how detuning of the laser from the resonance frequency of the atoms affects the fluctuations in the fluorescence. The fluctuation behavior is quite sensitive to the correlation time of the chaotic field.

Fluctuations in atomic fluorescence induced by laser noise

Gautam Vemuri

The dynamical behavior of an atom interacting with a coherent and a chaotic field is investigated. Langevin equations describing the time dependent behavior of the dipole moment and population inversion are numerically integrated using Monte-Carlo techniques. The model can account for a finite correlation time for the chaotic component. Results on fluctuations in the fluorescence intensity from an ensemble of two-level atoms and the power spectra of these intensity fluctuations are presented. The effect of detuning the pump field from the resonant frequency of the two-level atoms on the fluctuations in fluorescence is studied. The effect of field fluctuations on the macroscopic polarization produced by the atoms is also reported. The fluctuation behavior of the atomic fluorescence is found to be very sensitive to the correlation time of the stochastic component.
