Soft modes in the one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet near saturation

Abstract

The elementary excitations of the one-dimensional spin-S Heisenberg antiferromagnet near saturation are explained, with special attention to the soft mode, in terms of a gas of interacting magnons. Recent numerical studies of the antiferromagnet in a magnetic field uncovered the presence of the soft mode at a magnetization-dependent wave number for large magnetizations. We show that very near saturation and for large spins the antiferromagnet can be written in terms of a gas of magnons interacting via repulsive \ensuremath{\delta}-function potentials, a system with a known Bethe-ansatz solution. The soft mode can then be explained as a Kohn-anomaly-type excitation above a quasi-Fermi-sea. Other elementary excitations form a particle-hole-type double continuum. The soft mode's apparent physical observability is indicated by a shoulder at the appropriate wave number in the integrated longitudinal intensity.

Line-shape predictions via Bethe ansatz for the one-dimensional spin- 12 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field

Michael Karbach, Gerhard H. Muller

The spin fluctuations parallel to the external magnetic field in the ground state of the one-dimensional (1D) $s=\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet are dominated by a two-parameter set of collective excitations. In a cyclic chain of N sites and magnetization $0<{M}_{z}<N/2,$ the ground state, which contains ${2M}_{z}$ spinons, is reconfigured as the physical vacuum for a different species of quasiparticles, identifiable in the framework of the coordinate Bethe ansatz by characteristic configurations of Bethe quantum numbers. The dynamically dominant excitations are found to be scattering states of two such quasiparticles. For $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\infty},$ these collective excitations form a continuum in $(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ space with an incommensurate soft mode. Their matrix elements in the dynamic spin structure factor ${S}_{\mathrm{zz}}(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ are calculated directly from the Bethe wave functions for finite N. The resulting line- shape predictions for $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\infty}$ complement the exact results previously derived via algebraic analysis for the exact two-spinon part of ${S}_{\mathrm{zz}}(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ in the zero-field limit. They are relevant for neutron-scattering experiments on quasi-1D antiferromagnetic compounds in a strong magnetic field.

One-dimensional frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet of spin 1/2 in a strong magnetic field

S. Gluzman

The properties of the one-dimensional antiferromagnet of spin 1/2 in a strong magnetic field h with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions are studied in terms of the equivalent Bose-gas problem. We find that below the first critical field ${\mathit{h}}_{\mathit{c}\mathit{u}}$ the phase with a gap in the elementary excitations spectrum and corresponding plateau in the magnetization curve should exist due to the two-particle attraction in the vicinity of the commensurate wave number ${\mathit{p}}_{0\mathit{u}}$=\ensuremath{\pi}. In the interval between the first and second critical fields ${\mathit{h}}_{\mathit{c}\mathit{u}}$h${\mathit{h}}_{\mathit{c}\mathit{f}}$, the system behaves as the one-dimensional Bose gas with particle repulsion and the magnetization has a typical square-root dependence on field.

Excitation spectra of generalized antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains (abstract)

John B. Parkinson, J. C. Bonner

We compare the excitation spectra in the presence of a magnetic field of a number of integrable (exactly solvable) and nonintegrable quantum spin chains of various spin value s. The archetypal Bethe-ansatz integrable model is the s= 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HB AFM). The excitation spectra are characterized by a soft mode which tracks across the Brillouin zone as the field increases to its saturation value. A class of Bethe-ansatz integrable models with SU(2) symmetry and the general spin s display excitation spectra qualitatively similar to the spin- 1/2 model above, for all s. A second class of Bethe-ansatz integrable models has SU(n) symmetry, where n=2s+1. Like the SU(2) integrable chains, these models have gapless excitation spectra, but the basic Brillouin zone changes from k=±2π/(2s+1)a. Studies show that periodicity of the SU(3) member of the class changes (increases) as the field increases to saturation. For both classes of integrable models, there is a single type of excitation pattern which is generically similar for all s. In the case of the other models, on the other hand, numerical studies show that the excitations divide into at least two distinct classes. In the case of the s=1 HB AFM, at high fields (corresponding to SzT=N,N−1, . . .,N/2) the excitations map approximately onto the complete set of excitations for s= 1/2 , whereas at low fields (SzT=N/2,N/2−1,. . .,0) the excitations have notable classical character. In the case of the s=1 model with pure biquadratic exchange, one set of excitations, corresponding to SzT even (SzT=N,N−2,. . .,2,0), again shows an approximate mapping to the complete excitation set for s= 1/2 . The second class of excitations, corresponding to SzT odd, are very different. They are symmetric about k=±π/2a for all SzT, i.e., correspond to a basic Brillouin zone of ±π/2a.

Critical properties of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model in the presence of a uniform field

Andreas Fledderjohann, C. Gerhardt, K.-H. Mütter +2 more

In the presence of a uniform field the one-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model develops zero frequency excitations at field-dependent ``soft-mode'' momenta. We determine three types of critical quantities, which we extract from the finite-size dependence of the lowest excitation energies, the singularities in the static structure factors and the infrared singularities in the dynamical structure factors at the soft mode momenta. We also compare our results with the predictions of conformal field theory. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Study of the excited states of the quantum antiferromagnets

Mohammad G. Merdan

We investigate the quantum dynamics of the spins on different Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin lattice systems. Firstly, we applied the coupled-cluster method to the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic \emph{XXZ} model on a square lattice by employing an approximation which contains two-body long-range correlations and high-order four-body local correlations. Improvement is found for the ground-state energy, sublattice magnetization, and the critical anisotropy when comparing with the approximation including the two-body correlations alone. We also obtain the full excitation spectrum which is in good agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo results and the high-order spin-wave theory.Secondly, we study the longitudinal excitations of quantum antiferromagnets on a triangular lattice by a recently proposed microscopic many-body approach based on magnon-density waves. We calculate the full longitudinal excitation spectra of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model for a general spin quantum number in the isotropic limit. Similar to the square lattice model, we find that, at the center of the first hexagonal Brillouin zone $\Gamma(\mathbf q=0)$ and at the magnetic ordering wavevectors $\pm[\mathbf Q= (4\pi/3,0)]$, the excitation spectra become gapless in the thermodynamic limit, due to the slow, logarithmic divergence of the structure factor. However, these longitudinal modes on two-dimensional models may be considered as quasi-gapped, as any finite-size effect or small anisotropy will induce a large energy gap, when compared with the counterpart of the transverse spin-wave excitations. We have also investigated the excited states of the quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets on hexagonal lattices, including the longitudinal modes based on the magnon-density waves. A model Hamiltonian with a uniaxial single-ion anisotropy is first studied by a spin-wave theory based on the one-boson method; the ground state thus obtained is employed for the study of the longitudinal modes. The full energy spectra of both the transverse modes (i.e., magnons) and the longitudinal modes are obtained as functions of the nearest-neighbor coupling and the anisotropy constants. We have found two longitudinal modes due to the non-collinear nature of the triangular antiferromagnetic order, similar to that of the phenomenological field theory approach by Affleck. The excitation energy gaps due to the anisotropy and the energy gaps of the longitudinal modes without anisotropy are then investigated. We then compares our results for the longitudinal energy gaps at the magnetic wavevectors with the experimental results for several antiferromagnetic compounds with both integer and non-integer spin quantum numbers, and we find good agreements after the higher-order contributions are included in our calculations.

Excitation spectra of one-dimensional spin-1/2 Fermi gas with an attraction

Jia-Feng Pan, Jiajia Luo, Xi‐Wen Guan

Abstract Using an exact Bethe ansatz solution, we rigorously study excitation spectra of the spin-1/2 Fermi gas (called Yang–Gaudin model) with an attractive interaction. Elementary excitations of this model involve particle-hole excitation, hole excitation and adding particles in the Fermi seas of pairs and unpaired fermions. The gapped magnon excitations in the spin sector show a ferromagnetic coupling to the Fermi sea of the single fermions. By numerically and analytically solving the Bethe ansatz equations and the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations of this model, we obtain excitation energies for various polarizations in the phase of the Fulde–Ferrell–Larkin–Ovchinnikov-like state. For a small momentum (long-wavelength limit) and in the strong interaction regime, we analytically obtained their linear dispersions with curvature corrections, effective masses as well as velocities in particle-hole excitations of pairs and unpaired fermions. Such a type of particle-hole excitations display a novel separation of collective motions of bosonic modes within paired and unpaired fermions. Finally, we also discuss magnon excitations in the spin sector and the application of Bragg spectroscopy for testing such separated charge excitation modes of pairs and single fermions.
