Interference effects in the scattering of identical atoms in a laser radiation field

Abstract

The properties of the collision integral in a quantum Boltzmann-type kinetic equation are studied under the conditions of spatially nonuniform distributions of colliding particles interacting with an external electromagnetic field. The components of the nonlinear resonances and the velocity distribution of the excited atoms, which are due to polarization transitions, are determined on the basis of the Kazantsev collision integral.

Emission of radiation from atoms colliding with particles polarized by a laser field

Sergei G Rautian, Anatolii M. Shalagin

A theoretical analysis is made of the polarization of atomic states (inhomogeneous distribution over magnetic sublevels) induced by collisions with particles polarized by a laser field. The transfer of polarization may be observed by investigating the polarization of the spontaneous radiation emitted from atoms. The polarization tensor of such spontaneous radiation is calculated. A close relationship between the components of this tensor and the characteristics of an elementary scattering event is established.

Quantum and nonlocal coherent effects in Boltzmann gases

A. E. Meyerovich

Quantum coherent phenomena in Boltzmann gases are studied on the basis of the generalized Waldmann-Snider kinetic equation. The equation takes into account the effects of quantum identity of particles. The conditions are formulated for the propagation of different collective modes in gases of particles with arbitrary internal degrees of freedom. Collective coherent effects are macroscopic manifestations of the molecular field for the transverse (off-diagonal) elements of particle distribution in a ``polarized'' system (a system with a nonuniform population of internal energy levels in an unperturbed state). The simplest results are obtained for particles with equidistant internal-energy levels exploiting the analogy with spin-polarized quantum gases. The accurate study of nonlocal interaction terms permits one to compare classical-kinetic and Fermi-liquid approaches to kinetic phenomena in dilute gases, and shows the limitations of both approaches. In the case of collective modes, more accurate schemes of derivation of the kinetic equation must be accompanied by the simultaneous calculations of nonlocal contributions.

Models of the Dynamics of Spatially Separated Broadband Electromagnetic Fields Interacting with Resonant Atoms

Ashat M. Basharov

The Markov model of spontaneous emission of an atom localized in a spatial region with a broadband electromagnetic field with zero photon density is considered in the conditions of coupling of the electromagnetic field with the broadband field of a neighboring space. The evolution operator of the system and the kinetic equation for the atom are obtained. It is shown that the field coupling constant affects the rate of spontaneous emission of the atom, but is not manifested in the atomic frequency shift. The analytic expression for the radiative decay constant for the atom is found to be analogous in a certain sense to the expression for the decay constant for a singly excited localized ensemble of identical atoms in the conditions when the effect of stabilization of its excited state by the Stark interaction with the vacuum broadband electromagnetic field is manifested. The model is formulated based on quantum stochastic differential equations of the non- Wiener type and the generalized algebra of the Ito differential of quantum random processes.

The light pressure force and the friction and diffusion coefficients for atoms in a resonant nonuniformly polarized laser field

A. V. Bezverbnyĭ, Прудников Олег Николаевич, А. В. Тайченачев +2 more

The motion of slow atoms with degenerate energy levels in a resonant, nonuniformly polarized laser field is described by the Fokker-Planck equation for the atomic distribution function in phase space in terms of the semiclassical approach. Field gradient expansions are used for the spatially nonuniform coefficients of the equation. For closed atomic transitions J g =J→J e =J+1 (J g and J e are the total angular momenta of the ground and excited states, respectively), new analytical results are presented for the light pressure force and the friction and diffusion coefficients in momentum space. These results allow the kinetic effects (laser cooling, localization in optical potential wells, etc.) in a field of arbitrary one-, two-, or three-dimensional configuration to be investigated. In several cases, the new contributions to the friction coefficient are interpreted qualitatively.

Modelling light-induced kinetic effects in gases with eigenvalues of collision operators

S Kryszewski, Gerard Nienhuis

The authors consider a system of two-level atoms coupled to a radiation field and immersed in a buffer gas. The corresponding Bloch-like equations are augmented by collision operators stemming from the linear Boltzmann equation. Collision operators describe velocity-changing collisions that give rise to various kinetic effects of light. They study the general properties of collision operators, the main one consisting of the fact that such operators are Hermitian in a suitably defined space of velocity distribution functions They introduce a set of functions that serve as approximations to the eigenfunctions. The eigenvalues are connected with transport coefficients (they give an example of such a relation), but they keep eigenvalues as free parameters of the approach. In this way the authors can describe the whole class of collision operators, the Keilson-Storer model being a particular example. Employing the introduced eigenfunctions they derive and formally solve the equations of motion for the expansion coefficients of the elements of the density matrix of active atoms.

Interference phenomena at the elastic collision of atoms with formation of the Feshbach resonance in the presence of laser radiation field

E. A. Gazazyan, A. D. Gazazyan, V. O. Chaltykyan

Resonant scattering of atoms with formation of the Feshbach resonance in the presence of a laser radiation coupling the levels of two bound atoms (a molecule) is considered. The laser field leads to a second resonance in scattering and broadening of resonances, which facilitates the possibility of experimental observation of asymmetry of the total scattering cross-section arising because of interference between resonant and potential scatterings. The effects associated with interference of the two channels of decay of a bound system of two atoms (a molecule) in the laser field are studied. An expression is obtained for the scattering length in collision of two cold atoms in the field of laser radiation.
