Towards magnetic trapping of molecules

Břetislav Friedrich, Robert deCarvalho, Jinha Kim +3 more

The advent of buffer-gas loaded magnetic traps for atoms has opened the possibility of trapping paramagnetic molecules. We survey our results on the loading, trapping and spectroscopy of Eu atoms that demonstrated the technique. The principles governing molecular trapping considering in particular the O2 and NO systems are outlined. The trapping of molecules should prove particularly useful in spectroscopy, especially ultra-high resolution spectroscopy that requires cold (slow), trapped (long interaction time) samples. Similar to cold atoms, cold molecules could be interrogated at a level of detail which is likely to provide new insights into their structure and interactions.

Pump-probe spectroscopy of cold, trapped atoms is discussed with particular attention to mechanisms specific for cold atoms and potential diagnostics applications. The discussion is illustrated with experimental results obtained with 85 Rb atoms trapped in a magneto-optical trap. Most important applications are non-destructive, real-time velocimetry (thermometry) and analysis of optical lattice dynamics.

Ionization spectroscopy in cold rubidium atoms

Leszek Krzemień, Kacper Baster, Krzysztof Brzozowski +3 more

We demonstrate photoionization spectroscopy in cold rubidium atoms trapped in a working magneto-optical trap. Three-photon ionization with two-photon resonance proceeds along various channels, with the step-by-step 5S-5P-5D transition and with the two-photon excitation of the 5D or 7S state. The processes are monitored by measuring ion signals which allow sensitive spectroscopy of weak transitions in a cold-atom sample.
