Abstract

We study the quantum phase transition of ultracold atoms in the honeycomb optical lattice. The Hamiltonian of ultracold bosonic atoms in the honeycomb optical lattice is derived. We take the mean-field approximation and further solve the Hamiltonian with the numerical diagonalization method. We obtain the phase diagram and find that the Mott-insulator (MI), density wave (DW) and modulated superfluid (MS) phases appear. Furthermore, the phase diagram is analyzed according to the order parameter and the average number of particles.

QUANTUM PHASES OF ULTRACOLD BOSONIC ATOMS IN A TWO-DIMENSIONAL OPTICAL SUPERLATTICE

Jing-Min Hou

We study quantum phases of ultracold bosonic atoms in a two-dimensional optical superlattice. The extended Bose–Hubbard model derived from the system of ultracold bosonic atoms in an optical superlattice is solved numerically with the Gutzwiller approach. We find that the modulated superfluid (MS), Mott-insulator (MI) and density-wave (DW) phases appear in some regimes of parameters. The experimental detection of the first-order correlations and the second-order correlations of different quantum phases with time-of-flight and noise-correlation techniques is proposed.

Chiral bosonic phases on the Haldane honeycomb lattice

Ivana Vasić, Alexandru Petrescu, Karyn Le Hur +1 more

Recent experiments in ultracold atoms and photonic systems have realized lattice models with artificial gauge fields. Here the authors introduce a bosonic version of the Haldane Hubbard Hamiltonian on the honeycomb lattice and use several analytical and numerical methods to uncover a consistent picture of the phase diagram. Three distinct phases are found: chiral superfluid, uniform superfluid, and a plaquette Mott insulator, all of which should be accessible to future experiments.

Phase Diagram of Mixtures of Ultracold Bosons in Optical Lattice

Sergii Anufriiev, T. A. Zaleski

We study a behaviour of mixture of two species of ultracold bosons trapped in optical lattice.Using mean-field approximation, we determine the phase diagram of the system for wide range of parameters. We observe that each of the groups of atoms can condense into superfluid state or localize and form the Mott insulator, which yields that the whole system is either superfluid, the Mott insulator, or a mixed state. It appears that introduction of interaction between different kinds of atoms can strongly renormalise the phase diagram. It can alter the critical behaviour modifying multi-criticality of crossing points and order of phase transitions between mixed and superfluid states.

Quantum Phases of Cold Bosonic Atoms in an Optical Lattice with Inhomogeneous Atomic Interactions and Coexistence of Multi Phases*

Yanying Li, Jing-Min Hou

Abstract We study cold bosonic atoms on a two-dimensional inhomogeneous optical lattice with site-dependent atomic interactions. With the tight-binding approximation, we derive the extended Bose–Hubbard model. Base on the mean-field approximation, the ground states are solved by the exact diagonalization method. We calculate the mean-field order parameter and particle number density for the ground states. We find the coexistence of superfluid phase and Mott-insulator phase on the two-dimensional inhomogeneous optical lattice in appropriate parameter ranges.

Bose-Hubbard model on a honeycomb superlattice: Quantum phase transitions and lattice effects

Wei-Wei Wang, Jin Yang, Jian-Ping Lv +1 more

We investigate the ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams of the Bose-Hubbard model on a honeycomb superlattice. The interplay between the superlattice potential depth $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}/t$ and the on-site interaction $U/t$ gives rise to three distinct quantum phases at zero temperature: a superfluid phase, a Mott insulator I phase with unit filling on each site, and a Mott insulator II phase characterized by density imbalance---double occupancy on one sublattice and vacancy on the other at unit filling. The SF-MI transitions are found to be continuous, consistent with second-order quantum phase transitions. We further extend our analysis to finite temperatures within the superfluid regime. Our work highlights how a honeycomb superlattice geometry enables access to interaction- and lattice-modulation-driven quantum phases, including a density-imbalanced Mott insulator and a robust superfluid regime, offering concrete theoretical predictions for cold-atom experiments.
