Abstract

The self-consistent solution to the problem of collective spontaneous emission of an active medium in any-Q resonator, taking into account the nonlinear coupling of counter-propagating wave, is found. The optical parameters of resonator are evaluated.

Nonlinear Bragg scattering and mode superradiance in an open Fabry—Perot resonator

E. R. Golubyatnikova, Vitalii V Kocharovskii, Vladimir V Kocharovskii

Mode superradiance (i.e. superfluorescence) in an open Fabry—Perot resonator is characterised by simultaneous emission of counterpropagating coherent pulses even when the mirrors have very low (but finite) reflection coefficients, beginning from R cr ≪ 1. It is shown that for any value of the resonator Q factor, even when R ≫ R cr or R ~ 1, a self-matched λ /2 grating of the population inversion in a two-level medium does not result in significant Bragg reflection which would exceed the reflection from the mirrors. A consistent allowance for the interference of inhomogeneous conterpropagating waves significantly alters the spatial and temporal dynamics of depletion of the population inversion and, consequently, greatly changes he profile of collective spontaneous radiation pulses, compared with the predictions of the mean field and unidirectional superradiance theories. A new nonlinear equation for superradiance in an open resonator is derived.

Optical superradiance: new ideas and new experiments

Anatolii V Andreev

An orderly account is given of the processes of coherent propagation, amplification, and generation of pulses in polyatomic resonant media. The characteristic features of the propagation of solitons in resonant media of finite length are considered. Comparisons are made of the exponential and lethargic amplification of pulses in resonant media. It is shown that an allowance for the reflection of the field from the boundaries of an active medium gives rise to a qualitatively different dependence of the parameters of the pulses on the reflection coefficients under superradiance and lasing conditions, which makes it possible to introduce a criterion to distinguish lasing from superradiance. An analysis is made of the characteristics of collective superradiance, which is a new case of coherent generation of pulses. Experimental and theoretical investigations of rf superradiance emitted by systems of nuclear spins are reviewed.

Analytic theory and qualitative analysis of the threshold conditions, nonlinear formation and spectral features of the pulsed superradiant emission and cooperative radiative behavior of many-particle systems in a low-Q Fabry-Perot cavity with distributed feedback of counter-propagating electromagnetic waves are carried out. Novel superradiant lasers are shown to be promising in the information optics and condensed matter physics.

Superradiant Effects on Pulse Propagation in Resonant Media

Antonio M. Ponte Goncalves, Andree A. Tallet, R. Lefèbvre

A theoretical model for the propagation of coherent light pulses in resonant media where a large number of atoms cooperate in spontaneous emission (superradiance) is discussed. The medium is supposedly free of inhomogeneous broadening, and no lossy relaxation mechanisms are taken into account. The conditions for the emission of all spontaneous radiation in the direction of pulse propagation are described. A semi-classical model is used and, at each point in the medium, the propagation field and the spontaneous damping field are considered separately. The equation governing the evolution of a superradiant system in the presence of an applied pulse is derived. A mechanism of energy transfer from the traveling pulse to the medium is described which includes superradiant spontaneous emission effects. As a result of the neglect of all lossy relaxation processes, all energy stored in the medium is eventually returned to the pulse by coherent spontaneous emission. Therefore, in this theory, all pulses travel through the medium without energy loss. Numerical results for square input pulses are discussed which show two possible types of propagation behavior: (a) Low input intensities produce a negative tail to the input (positive) pulse and sharpening of the tail with the advance in the medium; (b) higher input intensities produce, after sufficient penetration, a steady-state pulse envelope somewhat similar to the $2\ensuremath{\pi}$ pulses of self-induced transparency. The steady-state solutions of the equations of motion are found numerically and the pulse shapes are computed for different degrees of superradiance. In the limit of strong superradiance, very asymmetric pulse envelopes of large area are found. For negligible superradiance, approximately $2\ensuremath{\pi}$ hyperbolic-secant pulses are obtained. The effects of inhomogeneous broadening are briefly considered, and the consequences of important superradiant damping in photon-echo experiments are qualitatively discussed.

Harmonic generation accompanying collective spontaneous emission

Victor A Malyshev, Pablo Moreno

We discuss the possibility of producing harmonics while the process of collective spontaneous emission (superradiance) takes place in a solid. Self correlations of dipole radiators induced by the emitted field lead to a reduction of the emission time and consequently to an increase of the intensity. Estimations of the superradiant energy flux show that, for crystalline densities of radiators, this flux may be comparable with the atomic unit. This assures the highly nonlinear behavior necessary to observe a pulse of high harmonics during superradiant pulse. We apply the Floquet–Bloch expansion to analyze the features of harmonic production in the framework of the two-level model.

On the Asymmetric Generation of a Superradiant Laser with a Symmetric Low-Q Cavity

Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Vladimir A. Kukushkin, Sergey V. Tarasov +2 more

Abstract On the basis of numerical solution to the Maxwell–Bloch equations within the one-dimensional two-level model of a superradiant laser with a symmetric cavity in which the photon lifetime is less than the incoherent relaxation time of the optical-dipole oscillations of active centers, the phenomenon of the spontaneous asymmetric generation of counter-propagating waves under continuous uniform pumping of the active medium is revealed. It is shown that the observed symmetry breaking of the spatial profiles of counter-propagating waves of the electromagnetic field and, the polarization and inversion of the population of active-medium levels in the case of a small inhomogeneous broadening of the spectral line of its working transition occurs due to the asymmetric half-wave nonlinear grating of inversion of the energy-level population produced by these waves.
