Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics of Open Systems

Gérard G. Emch, Geoffrey L. Sewell

A theoretical framework for the nonequilibrium statistical mechanics of open systems is constructed. This is concerned with a formulation of a generalized master equation governing the evolution of an arbitrary system S in interaction with a ``large'' reservoir R. The dynamics of S are analyzed on the basis of a precise quantum-mechanical treatment of the microscopic equations of motion for the combined system S + R. On proceeding to the thermodynamical limit for R we obtain a generalized master equation for S, subject to specified conditions on the many-particle structure of R, its initial state, and its coupling to S. This master equation corresponds to a self-contained law of motion for S, in which the R variables appear only in the forms of certain thermal averages, taken over the initial state. This dynamical law is a generalization of the quantum-mechanical Liouville equation to a form appropriate to open systems.

General Non-Markovian Structure of Gaussian Master and Stochastic Schrödinger Equations

Lajos Diósi, Luca Ferialdi

General open quantum systems display memory features, their master equations are non-Markovian. We show that the subclass of Gaussian non-Markovian open system dynamics is tractable in a depth similar to the Markovian class. The structure of master equations exhibits a transparent generalization of the Lindblad structure. We find and parametrize the class of stochastic Schrödinger equations that unravel a given master equation, such a class was previously known for Markovian systems only. We show that particular non-Markovian unravelings known in the literature are special cases of our class.

Algebraic Structure of a Master Equation with Generalized Lindblad Form

Kazuyuki Fujii

The quantum damped harmonic oscillator is described by the master equation with usual Lindblad form. The equation has been solved completely by us in arXiv: 0710.2724 [quant-ph]. To construct the general solution a few facts of representation theory based on the Lie algebra su(1,1) were used. In this paper we treat a general model described by a master equation with generalized Lindblad form. Then we examine the algebraic structure related to some Lie algebras and construct the interesting approximate solution. Quantum Computation (Computer) is one of main subjects in Quantum Physics. To realize it we must overcome severe problems arising from Decoherence, so we need to study Quantum Open System to control decoherence (if possible). This paper is a series of [1] and [2], and we study dynamics of a quantum open system. First we explain our purpose in a short manner. See [3] as a general introduction to this subject. ∗E-mail address:
