Abstract

The theory of quantum phase transitions (QPTs) and excited states quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs) is briefly reviewed. The phase structure and phase diagram of the interacting boson model of nuclei are discussed. Experimental evidence for QPTs in nuclei is presented.

Symmetry and Phase Transitions in Nuclei

FRANCESCO IACHELLO, Matko Milin, Tamara Nikšić +2 more

The role of symmetry in (shape) quantum phase transitions (QPT) in nuclei is briefly reviewed. Finite size scaling is discussed. The concepts of excited state quantum phase transitions (ESQPT) and of critical matter are introduced. The ab initio theory of QPT is mentioned.

Excited state quantum phase transitions and monodromy

FRANCESCO IACHELLO

Quantum phase transitions (QPT) and excited state quantum phase transitions (ESQPT) in algebraic models are briefly discussed, in particular those occurring in the U(3) model of bending vibrations of molecules. Experimental evidence in the water molecule, H 2 O, is presented.

Symmetry and phase transitions: Quantum phase transitions in algebraic models

FRANCESCO IACHELLO

A brief description of the role of symmetry in phase transitions is given. Quantum phase transitions (QPT) in algebraic models are discussed, both at the semi-classical and quantal level. The newly introduced concept of excited states quantum phase transitions (ESQPT) is presented.

Lie algebra symmetries and quantum phase transitions in nuclei

Vkbk Ota

In this paper, an overview of some aspects of quantum phase transitions (QPT) in nuclei is given and they are: (i) QPT in interacting boson model (sdIBM), (ii) QPT in two-level models, (iii) critical point E(5) and X(5) symmetries, (iv) QPT in a simple solvable model with three-body forces. In addition, some open problems are also given.

Excited-state quantum phase transitions in bosonic lattice systems

Michal Macek

Concentrating on bosonic lattice systems, we ask whether and how Excited State Quantum Phase Transition (ESQPT) singularities occur in condensed matter systems with ground state QPTs. We study in particular the spectral singularities above the ground-state phase diagram of the boson Hubbard model. As a general prerequisite, we point out the analogy between ESQPTs and van Hove singularities (vHss).

QUANTUM PHASE TRANSITIONS IN MESOSCOPIC SYSTEMS

FRANCESCO IACHELLO

Shape phase transitions in nuclei, an example of quantum phase transitions in mesoscopic systems, are briefly reviewed. Spectral signatures of critical points in finite quantal systems are discussed and experimental examples are shown.
