THERMODYNAMICS OF THE FERMI-LINEARIZED EXTENDED HUBBARD MODEL

Abstract

The fermi linearization scheme for a two-site cluster (dimer) is applied to the extended Hubbard model, including Coulomb interaction between nearest neighbour sites. The partition function and the order parameter, as well as the average double-occupation and local magnetic moment are evaluated. The theory is checked by extended numerical analysis, performed here in the homogeneous case, when pairing is zero, and deriving the explicit temperature and filling dependence of the above quantities. An interesting feature that emerges from such calculations is that the mean-field parameter characteristic of fermi-linearization is capable of describing two different phases, one of which is not present in the conventional Hubbard model. The order parameters corresponding to the two phases are explicitly derived. The novel phase can be ascribed to the n.n. Coulomb interaction, the role of whose strength V is analysed.

THE DIMER-CLUSTER FERMI-LINEARIZED HUBBARD MODEL: GROUND STATE AND PHASE SPACE

Arianna Montorsi, Mario Rasetti

The zero temperature phase space for the Hubbard model is constructed — in the frame of fermionic linearization with a two-site (dimer) cluster — resorting to its ground state, realized in the form of supercoherent state for the model dynamical superalgebra. Such phase space is characterized by the existence of regions in which the pairing order parameter is different from zero.

Electronic Correlations within Fermionic Lattice Models

M. Matlak, B. Grabiec, S. Krawiec

We investigate two-site electronic correlations within generalized Hubbard model, which incorporates the conventional Hubbard model (parameters: t (hopping between nearest neighbours), U (Coulomb repulsion (attraction))) supplemented by the intersite Coulomb interactions (parameters: J (1) (parallel spins), J (2) (antiparallel spins)) and the hopping of the intrasite Cooper pairs (parameter: V ).As a first step we find the eigenvalues Eα and eigenvectors |E α of the dimer and we represent each partial Hamiltonian Eα|Eα Eα| (α = 1, 2, . . ., 16) in the second quantization with the use of the Hubbard and spin operators. Each dimer energy level possesses its own Hamiltonian describing different two-site interactions which can be active only in the case when the level will be occupied by the electrons.A typical feature is the appearance of two generalized t-J interactions ascribed to two different energy levels which do not vanish even for U = J (1) = J (2) = V = 0 and their coupling constants are equal to ±t in this case.In the large U -limit for J (1) = J (2) = V = 0 there is only one t-J interaction with coupling constant equal to 4t 2 /|U | as in the case of a real lattice. The competition between ferromagnetism, antiferromagnetism and superconductivity (intrasite and intersite pairings) is also a typical feature of the model because it persists in the case U = J (1) = J (2) = V = 0 and t = 0.The same types of the electronic, competitive interactions are scattered between different energy levels and therefore their thermodynamical activities are dependent on the occupation of these levels. It qualitatively explains the origin of the phase diagram of the model. We consider also a real lattice as a set of interacting dimers to show that the competition between magnetism and superconductivity seems to be universal for fermionic lattice models.

Exact Diagonalization Study of an Extended Hubbard Model for a Cubic Cluster at Quarter Filling

Karol Szałowski, T. Balcerzak, M. Jaščur +2 more

In the paper the thermodynamics of a cubic cluster with 8 sites at quarter filling is characterized by means of exact diagonalization technique. Particular emphasis is put on the behaviour of such response functions as specific heat and magnetic susceptibility. The system is modelled with extended Hubbard model which includes electron hopping between both first and second nearest neighbours as well as coulombic interactions, both on-site and between nearest-neighbour sites. The importance of hopping between second nearest neighbours and coulombic interactions between nearest neighbours for the temperature dependences of thermodynamic response functions is analysed. In particular, the predictions of Schottky model are compared with the calculations based on the full energy spectrum.

Some Exact Results for the Zero-Bandwidth Extended Hubbard Model with Intersite Charge and Magnetic Interactions

Konrad Jerzy Kapcia, Waldemar Kłobus, S. Robaszkiewicz

The extended Hubbard model in the zero-bandwidth limit is studied. The eective Hamiltonian consists of (i) on-site U interaction, (ii) intersite densitydensity interaction W , and (iii) Ising-like magnetic exchange interaction J between the nearest-neighbors.We present rigorous (and analytical) results obtained within the transfer-matrix method for 1D chain in two particular cases: (a) W = 0 and n = 1; (b) U → +∞ and n = 1/2 (W = 0, J = 0).We obtain the exact formulae for the partition functions which enables to calculate thermodynamic properties such as entropy, specic heat (c), and double occupancy per site.In both cases the system exhibits an interesting temperature dependence of c involving a characteristic two-peak structure. There are no phase transitions at nite temperatures and the only transitions occur in the ground state.

One-dimensional extended Hubbard model in the atomic limit

Francesco Paolo Mancini, Francesco Paolo Mancini

We present the exact solution of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model in the atomic limit within the Green's function and equations of motion formalism. We provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the model by considering all the relevant response and correlation functions as well as thermodynamic quantities in the whole parameters space. At zero temperature we identify four phases in the plane (U,n) ( U is the on-site potential and n is the filling) and relative phase transitions as well as different types of charge ordering. These features are endorsed by investigating at T=0 the chemical potential and pertinent local correlators, the particle and double occupancy correlation functions, the entropy, and by studying the behavior in the limit T-->0 of the charge and spin susceptibilities. A detailed study of the thermodynamic quantities is also presented at finite temperature. This study evidences that a finite-range order persists for a wide range of the temperature, as shown by the behavior of the correlation functions and by the two-peak structure exhibited by the charge susceptibility and by the entropy. Moreover, the equations of motion formalism, together with the use of composite operators, allows us to exactly determine the set of elementary excitations. As a result, the density of states can be determined and a detailed analysis of the specific heat allows for identifying the excitations and for ascribing its two-peak structure to a redistribution of the charge density.

Variational cluster approach to thermodynamic properties of interacting fermions at finite temperatures: A case study of the two-dimensional single-band Hubbard model at half filling

Kazuhiro Seki, Tomonori Shirakawa, Seiji Yunoki

We formulate a finite-temperature scheme of the variational cluster approximation (VCA) particularly suitable for an exact-diagonalization cluster solver. Based on the analytical properties of the single-particle Green's function matrices, we explicitly show the branch-cut structure of logarithm of the complex determinant functions appearing in the self-energy-functional theory (SFT) and whereby construct an efficient scheme for the finite-temperature VCA. We also derive the explicit formulas for entropy and specific heat within the framework of the SFT. We first apply the method to explore the antiferromagnetic order in a half-filled Hubbard model by calculating the entropy, specific heat, and single-particle excitation spectrum for different values of on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ and temperature $T$. We also calculate the $T$ dependence of the single-particle excitation spectrum in the strong coupling region, and discuss the overall similarities to and the fine differences from the spectrum obtained by the spin-density-wave mean-field theory at low temperatures and the Hubbard-I approximation at high temperatures. Moreover, we show a necessary and sufficient condition for the third law of thermodynamics in the SFT. On the basis of the thermodynamic properties, such as the entropy and the double occupancy, calculated via the $T$ and/or $U$ derivative of the grand potential, we obtain a crossover diagram in the $(U,T)$ plane, which separates a Slater-type insulator and a Mott-type insulator. Next, we demonstrate the finite-temperature scheme in the cluster-dynamical-impurity approximation (CDIA), i.e., the VCA with noninteracting bath orbitals attached to each cluster, and study the paramagnetic Mott metal-insulator transition in the half-filled Hubbard model. Formulating the finite-temperature CDIA, we first address a subtle issue regarding the treatment of the artificially introduced bath degrees of freedom which are absent in the originally considered Hubbard model. We then apply the finite-temperature CDIA to calculate the finite-temperature phase diagram in the $(U,T)$ plane. Metallic, insulating, coexistence, and crossover regions are distinguished from the bath-cluster hybridization-variational-parameter dependence of the grand-potential functional. We find that the Mott transition at low temperatures is discontinuous, and the coexistence region of the metallic and insulating states persists down to zero temperature. The result obtained here by the finite-temperature CDIA is complementary to the previously reported zero-temperature CDIA phase diagram.
