Low-to-no-power covert communication based on energy dispersion

Jianping An, Haichuan Ding, Shuai WANG

With advances in computing and signal processing technologies, wireless communication systems are facing severe security threats, necessitating effective countermeasures. Unlike traditional secure communication schemes, covert communication should hide not only information content but also data transmission activity from adversaries. To this end, we propose an energy dispersion-based covert communication scheme to ensure that communication signal detection by adversaries has close-to-zero probability. The proposed scheme spreads the energy of transmitted signals throughout the whole parameter space to limit the signal detection capability of adversaries and improve the covertness of signal transmission. By defining the covertness of transmitted signals with respect to the adversaries' prior knowledge of parameter spaces, we study the modeling of energy dispersion-based covert communication systems and analyze their fundamental performance limitations. With these analytical results, we further investigate the impacts of adversaries' prior knowledge on the achievable throughput of covert communications. These results demonstrate that the dispersion of signal energy can degrade the performance of coherent signal detection so that the achievable throughput of the covert communication system does not necessarily follow the power-law decrease observed in existing work on the low probability of detection communications. This work lays the theoretical foundation for covert communication based on energy dispersion.

Regulating Covert Communication Capacity with Full-Duplex Receiver Against Location-Uncertain Eavesdropper

Rui Xin Xu, Gaolei Li, Yuchen Liu +3 more

Covert communication enforces the transmitted signal to be indistinguishable from other signals under wireless environment, making it difficult for an eavesdropper to detect and intercept the message. The most common approach within covert systems is the augmentation of artificial noise (AN), ensuring reliable transmission. However, this strategy becomes problematic when the eavesdropper's position is uncertain, as continuous amplification of interference power can precipitate a substantial decline in covert communication capacity. In this paper, we investigate the covert communication between legitimate transmitter (i.e., Alice) and full duplex receiver (i.e., Bob) in the presence of the location uncertainties of the eavesdropper (i.e., Willie). We first derive the sufficient condition for achieving covert communication through robustness analysis. Then, we derive the effective throughput to measure the covert communication capacity. Afterward, by using joint optimization technology, the optimal AN power of Bob and the number of antennas for Alice are jointly designed to maximize the effective throughput subject to a covertness constraint. Theoretical analysis indicates that reducing the AN power while increasing the number of antennas helps to improve the system capacity, the effective throughput between Alice and Bob is inversely proportional to the distance between them. Finally, the validity of our analytical approach is corroborated by simulation results.

Covert Communication for UAV-Assisted Wireless Systems with Probabilistic Jamming

Linying Tian, Chan Gao, Dong Zheng +2 more

With the rapid development of wireless network technology, wireless communication system effectively satisfies the demand for personal communication and information acquisition. However, the significant security issue is that wireless communication is both in a complex external environment and has open space characteristics, which makes the information vulnerable to malicious attacks. In this paper, we investigate the covert performance in an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted wireless communication system with probabilistic jamming from a legitimate node. We propose a probabilistic jamming-based transmission scheme that uses a probabilistic approach to send an artificial noise with variable power to against the warden’s detection. For the proposed scheme, we then derive expressions for the warden’s detection error probability and covert rate. We also find the optimal covert performance under a given covertness. Finally, the simulation results are given to reveal the impact of the a priori artificial noise transmission probability on the communication covertness and the system’s performance, confirming the effectiveness of the probabilistic jamming scheme.
