Abstract

Polarization of the stimulated photon echo (SPE) at the 0 ↔ 1 transition in ytterbium vapors in the presence of a longitudinal magnetic field of 0–40 G is experimentally and theoretically studied. The SPE is generated using three light pulses with identical linear polarizations, so that the SPE polarization is the same at zero magnetic field. In the presence of a weak magnetic field, the SPE polarization vector rotates around the magnetic field vector and the depolarization of the SPE signal takes place. Each of the SPE polarization components exhibits biharmonic oscillations depending on the magnetic field. In the presence of a strong magnetic field, these oscillations vanish and the SPE becomes depolarized. The experimental data are in qualitative agreement with the results of the numerical calculations performed with the method of the evolution operator for the finite-duration excitation pulses. The application of the results for the processing of optical data is discussed.

Stimulated photon echo in magnetic field: research for optical memory

Н. Н. Рубцова, В. Н. Ищенко, Хворостов Евгений Борисович +2 more

Shape correlation and magnetic field control of stimulated photon echo (SPE) are investigated as basic properties useful for optical data storage and treatment. The SPE polarization was investigated in ytterbium vapour at the intercombination transition (6s6p) 3P1 → (6s2) 1S0 for the first time in a wide range of longitudinal magnetic field strength. SPE was generated by three resonant laser pulses of identical linear polarization and wave vectors directed symmetrically at small angles to the axis of cylindric vapour cell. SPE polarization is close to linear one in zero magnetic field. As magnetic field increases, the SPE polarization acquires ellipticity with the ellipse axis rotated around magnetic field vector. Components of SPE polarization show oscillations versus magnetic field with higher contrast of the oscillations in the weak field.

Photon echo in the presence of a magnetic field: New prospects for data accumulation and processing

Н. Н. Рубцова, Sergei A. Kochubei, В. Н. Ищенко +3 more

The possibility for echo signal switching-off and the switching of echo polarization between the ±45° positions is demonstrated for the photon echo (PE) and stimulated photon echo (SPE) generated in Yb vapor at the (6s6p)3 P 1 − (6s 2)1 S 0 transition by two pulses of the resonant linearly polarized radiation at appropriate experimental parameters in the weak magnetic field limit. The experimental data are in qualitative agreement with the theoretical analysis and the calculations made for the 1 ↔ 0 transition. The strong magnetic field limit leads to unpolarized PE and SPE signals generated by linearly polarized radiation pulses. The possibility of the generation of a long-lived echo in ytterbium vapor due to the magnetic field induced mixing of the upper working level with the metastable level is discussed. The results can be employed for the optical data storage and processing.

Photon echo in gases: From the non-Faraday rotation to unpolarized echo

Н. Н. Рубцова, Igor V. Yevseyev

A retrospective review of both theoretical and experimental works on photon echo in gases in the presence of longitudinal magnetic fields is presented from the viewpoint of new possibilities opened by this research for polarization echo spectroscopy of gases. The main attention is given to the physical scenario of the magnetic field’s effect on the properties of the photon echo. New results on the photon echo and stimulated photon echo in ytterbium vapor at the 1 ↔ 0 transition in the presence of the longitudinal magnetic field whose strength ranges from weak to strong are presented. Possible applications of the magnetic field effects for optical data storage and processing are analyzed.

Collision-induced stimulated photon echoes in ‘strong’ magnetic field

Решетов Владимир Александрович

Abstract Collision-induced stimulated photon echoes formed in a gaseous medium on the transition with the angular momentum change J a = 0 → J b = 1 under the action of ‘strong’ longitudinal magnetic field, when the echo pulse becomes unpolarized, are considered with an account of elastic depolarizing collisions. In the case of narrow spectral line the explicit expressions for the echo polarization density matrix and the degree of polarization are obtained. In the case of broad spectral line the results of the numeric calculations reproduce qualitatively the curve obtained in the experiments with ytterbium vapor.

Stimulated photon echo at the transition 0–1 in ytterbium vapour: circular polarizations

Гольдорт Вениамин Гершевич, Хворостов Евгений Борисович, В. Н. Ищенко +3 more

For the first time, stimulated photon echoes (SPE) generated in a gas at the transition 0↔1 by circularly polarized resonant radiation pulses were analysed both theoretically and experimentally. Experiments were performed for the inter-combination transition (6s2) 1S0↔ (6s6p) 3P1 of 174Yb (type 0↔1). The SPE generated by three radiation pulses of identical circular polarizations has the same circular polarization. When the second or the third exciting radiation pulse has a circular polarization opposite to that of the other two pulses, the SPE polarization coincides with that of the oppositely polarized pulse. Finally, when the first exciting radiation pulse has a circular polarization opposite to the circular polarizations of the second pulse and third pulse, the SPE does not appear either in pure ytterbium vapour or in its mixture with a heavy atomic buffer.

Collision-induced photon echo in ytterbium vapour at the transition 0–1: magnetic field effect

Хворостов Евгений Борисович, Гольдорт Вениамин Гершевич, В. Н. Ищенко +3 more

Collision-induced photon echo generated in ytterbium vapour at the transition (6s 2 ) 1 S 0 ↔(6s6p) 3 P 1 (transition of the type 0 ↔ 1) was investigated in the presence of the longitudinal magnetic field strength between zero and 5.6 G. For the weak magnetic fields, not over 0.27 G, the collision-induced echo signal decreases with magnetic field increase. Further increase of the magnetic field strength reveals oscillatory behavior of the echo signal. Experimental results are in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions.
