Abstract

In this work we use the spreading of damage technique to study the dynamical properties of a two-dimensional Ising model with competition between ferromagnetic exchange ( J 0 ) and antiferromagnetic dipolar ( J d ) interactions. In recent works it was shown that, depending on the ratio δ = J 0 / J d , the ground state of the model corresponds to ferromagnetic stripes whose width increases with δ. In this striped phase the system displays a slow dynamics, characterized by the formation and growth of magnetic domains. We found that, within these phases, the spreading of damage technique allows one to identify two dynamical phases, with a behaviour similar to that observed in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model of spin glasses.

Phase transitions and critical phenomena in the two-dimensional Ising model with dipole interactions: A short-time dynamics study

C. M. Horowitz, M. A. Bab, M. Mazzini +2 more

The ferromagnetic Ising model with antiferromagnetic dipole interactions is investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations, focusing on the characterization of the phase transitions between the tetragonal liquid and stripe of width h phases. The dynamic evolution of the physical observables is analyzed within the short-time regime for 0.5≤δ≤1.3, where δ is the ratio between the short-range exchange and the long-range dipole interaction constants. The obtained results for the interval 0.5≤δ≤1.2 indicate that the phase transition line between the h=1 stripe and tetragonal liquid phases is continuous. This finding contributes to clarifying the controversy about the order of this transition. This controversy arises from the difficulties introduced in the simulations due to the presence of long-range dipole interactions, such as an important increase in the simulation times that limits the system size used, strong finite size effects, as well as to the existence of multiple metastable states at low temperatures. The study of the short-time dynamics of the model allows us to avoid these hindrances. Moreover, due to the fact that the finite-size effects do not significantly affect the power-law behavior exhibited in the observables within the short-time regime, the results could be attributed to those corresponding to the thermodynamic limit. As a consequence of this, a careful characterization of the critical behavior for the whole transition line is performed by giving the complete set of critical exponents.

Short-time critical dynamics of damage spreading in the two-dimensional Ising model

M. Leticia Rubio Puzzo, Ezequiel Vicente Albano

The short-time critical dynamics of propagation of damage in the Ising ferromagnet in two dimensions is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Starting with equilibrium configurations at $T=\ensuremath{\infty}$ and magnetization $M=0$, an initial damage is created by flipping a small amount of spins in one of the two replicas studied. In this way, the initial damage is proportional to the initial magnetization ${M}_{0}$ in one of the configurations upon quenching the system at ${T}_{C}$, the Onsager critical temperature of the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition. It is found that, at short times, the damage increases with an exponent ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{D}=1.915(3)$, which is much larger than the exponent $\ensuremath{\theta}=0.197$ characteristic of the initial increase of the magnetization $M(t)$. Also, an epidemic study was performed. It is found that the average distance from the origin of the epidemic $(⟨{R}^{2}(t)⟩)$ grows with an exponent ${z}^{\ensuremath{\ast}}\ensuremath{\approx}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\approx}1.9$, which is the same, within error bars, as the exponent ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{D}$. However, the survival probability of the epidemics reaches a plateau so that $\ensuremath{\delta}=0$. On the other hand, by quenching the system to lower temperatures one observes the critical spreading of the damage at ${T}_{D}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.51{T}_{C}$, where all the measured observables exhibit power laws with exponents ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{D}=1.026(3)$, $\ensuremath{\delta}=0.133(1)$, and ${z}^{\ensuremath{\ast}}=1.74(3)$.

Damage spreading in the Ising model with a microcanonical constraint

F. G. Brady Moreira, Adauto J. F. de Souza, Ananias M. Mariz

We study damage spreading in the ferromagnetic Ising model, on the square lattice, by performing numerical simulations in the microcanonical ensemble. Although the damage spreads for all temperature values, a dynamical critical phenomenon is observed at ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{d}}$=1.020(2)${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{C}}$ (${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{C}}$ is the Curie temperature): For T\ensuremath{\ge}${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{d}}$ the damage D(t) is insensitive to its initial value D(0), while for T${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{d}}$ a weak dependence on D(0) is present in such a way that for each T there are two values of D(t) corresponding to the initial conditions D(0)1/2 and D(0)>1/2. We have also identified a convenient order parameter to characterize the transition occurring at ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{d}}$. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Damage spreading and ferromagnetic order in the three-dimensional ±J Edwards-Anderson spin glass model

M. Leticia Rubio Puzzo, FEDERICO J. ROMÁ, S. Bustingorry +1 more

Using information of the ground-state topology we show that the damage spreading technique unveils ferromagnetic order in the three-dimensional ± J Edwards-Anderson spin glass model. With spin-flipping dynamics damage spreads for temperatures larger than T g , the glass transition temperature. With spin-orienting dynamics and for temperatures in T g < T < T d , damage spreads over a finite region of the system, composed of finite clusters of ferromagnetic character. T d is the spin-orienting damage critical temperature, which is of the same order as the critical temperature of the ferromagnetic Ising model, T c . The present results allow for an interpretation within a single framework of known —and sometimes puzzling— results, giving an intuitive picture for growing order in spin glasses.

Damage spreading in a three-dimensional Ising model in a magnetic field

G. Le Caër

The time evolution of two ferromagnetic Ising cubic systems, which differ by the orientation of a single spin at t=0, has been studied in a magnetic field B by computer simulation. The critical field B c (T), above which the previous initial damage does not spread, has been determined. The magnetisation for B=B c is very well approximated by M(B c )=1-exp(-T c /T) in the range of T values investigated. The concentration of minority spins at B c (T) differs strongly from the corresponding concentration for percolation at T.

Study on dynamical critical exponents of the Ising model using the damage spreading method

F Wang, Naomichi Hatano, Masuo Suzuki

The dynamical behaviour of the Ising model with heat-bath dynamics is studied. According to our investigation of the model using the damage spreading method, the dynamical phase transition temperature is estimated as 4.52+or-0.03 for the 3D Ising model. The dynamical critical exponent z has been obtained as 2.16+or-0.04 for the 2D ferromagnet and 2.09+or-0.04 for the 3D Ising model. The scaling property of magnetization is obtained.
