Parametric conversion under two-photon resonance conditions in the presence of limiting processes

Abstract

An investigation was made of the influence of two-photon absorption and inverse Raman scattering on the characteristics of parametric mixing under two-photon resonance conditions. Broadening of the spectral profile and saturation of the conversion efficiency were observed when the intensities of the interacting waves were increased. Good agreement was obtained between experimental and theoretical dependences calculated allowing for two-photon absorption and inverse Raman scattering.

Hyper-Raman scattering and four-wave parametric interaction in two-photon pumping of metal vapors

Yu. P. Malakyan

Investigations are made of hyper-Raman scattering and four-photon parametric processes in two-photon excitation of metal vapor. The laws of propagation of infrared and ultraviolet radiation generated in a metal vapor medium by these processes are found for the steady-state interaction. The nonlinear polarization of the medium is obtained in terms of elements of the atomic density matrix allowing for saturation by the pump field and for the influence of collisions. The spectral and tuning characteristics of the converted radiation are studied and a comparison is made with experimental data. A dip observed in the infrared radiation spectrum for hyper-Raman scattering and its broadening are explained. A detailed discussion is given of the role of collisions that substantially narrow the tuning range of the infrared radiation in hyper-Raman scattering.

Nonlinear processes in two-photon pumped atomic vapors

A. Martínez García

A formalism suited for the study of two-photon resonant processes in atomic vapors is developed. Applications to the study of hyper-Raman scattering, four-photon parametric conversion and second-harmonic generation were carried out. Hyper-Raman scattering and four-photon parametric conversion were analyzed at steady state in the small-gain and saturation regimes. For the small-gain region, the results of perturbation theory are reproduced. The behavior of Stokes and idler fields in the saturation regime is shown to be in agreement with experimental results. Several characteristics of the line shapes experimentally observed are also qualitatively explained. A time-frequency analysis of the transients of the Stokes gain provides a method of studying the evolution of Stark shifts and dynamical Stark splittings, as well as constituting a valuable tool to distinguish between Raman-type and population-type lines.

Influence of stimulated Raman scattering on the conversion efficiency in four wave mixing

Richard Wunderlich, Moore, W. R. Garrett +1 more

Secondary nonlinear optical effects following parametric four wave mixing in sodium vapor are investigated. The generated ultraviolet radiation induces stimulated Raman scattering and other four wave mixing process. Population transfer due to Raman transitions strongly influences the phase matching conditions for the primary mixing process. Pulse shortening and a reduction in conversion efficiency are observed. 8 refs., 3 figs.

Double resonances of parametric susceptibilities in the case of vibrational-rotational transitions in molecules

A. V. Karov, Mikhail Yu. Ryabikin, Gennadii I Freidman

An analysis is made of the frequency addition processes in the case of a two-frequency double resonance involving vibrational-rotational transitions and their potential applications in nonlinear spectroscopy. A study is made of the influence of the saturation effect and of the frequency detuning from one- and two-photon resonances on the conversion processes and estimates are obtained for a specific molecular gas. It is shown that in the case of two-frequency interaction under double resonance conditions the efficiency of conversion of a probe wave into a wave at the signal frequency increases at least several hundred times, compared with the case of the one-frequency interaction.

Generation of Stokes and anti-Stokes waves initiated by two-photon additional illumination

Nikolai E. Kornienko, A. M. Steba, V. L. Strizhevskiǐ

A theoretical analysis is made of the simultaneous generation of Stokes and anti-Stokes waves initiated by two-photon additional illumination. This is done allowing for Raman and parametric processes, saturation effects, and also for a possible difference between the Raman polarizabilities for the Stokes and anti-Stokes waves. The conditions for the establishment of various asymptotic regimes are determined and general expressions are derived for the ultimate conversion efficiencies, assuming that pump and additional illumination are fed into a medium (inverted or uninverted) under exact resonance and phase-matching conditions. The spatial evolution of the amplitudes of the interacting waves is investigated by an accurate analytic solution of the problem in an important particular case and using solutions in the approximation of a constant pump wave or constant additional illumination.

Optimization of two-photon-resonant four-wave mixing: application to 1302-nm generation in mercury vapor

Arlee V. Smith, W. J. Alford, George Ronald Hadley

A detailed model of two-photon-resonant four-wave mixing that includes the consideration of efficiency-limiting processes is presented. The model provides a generally applicable systematic approach for maximizing conversion efficiencies for both exact and near two-photon resonance. For exact two-photon resonance, an interference effect limits efficiency to a value determined by ratios of nonlinear susceptibilities and input intensities. For near two-photon resonance, nonlinear refractive indices limit efficiencies unless input intensities are properly balanced. For the specific case of 130.2-nm generation in Hg, we examine a number of potential additional efficiency-limiting processes, including amplified spontaneous emission, stimulated Raman and hyper-Raman gain, parametric gain, linear absorption, and population transfer. We include isotopic effects and Gaussian-profile beams. From our analysis, we conclude that efficiencies of approximately 10% should be feasible by using collimated light beams in an energy-scalable system.
