Effect of a local field on the spectra of autoionization resonances

Abstract

The change of the spectral parameters of a single autoionization resonance with concentration in gaseous media is studied in terms of the isotropic Lorentz-Lorenz model. It is shown that the effect of a local field may result in a shift, narrowing, or broadening of the resonance, as well as in a change in its amplitude and the character of interference of the discrete state with the continuum. By appropriate selection or variation of the partial pressures of substances in the mixture, the separation of a particular regime is possible. An analogy to the laser-induced narrowing of autoionization resonances is drawn.

Field-induced narrowing of autoionization atomic states as a way of creating population inversion

Svetlana Kotochigova

We discuss the possibility of narrowing the atomic autoionization states via their resonance mixing in a field. The results show that, in contrast to the interference process [Yu. I. Geller and A. K. Popov, Laser Stimulation of Nonlinear Resonances in Continuous Spectra (Nauka, Novosibirsk, 1981)] or to the mixing of two isolated states [A. I. Andryushin et al., Sov. Phys.---JETP 61, 678 (1985)], with mixing of multiplets one may expect substantial narrowing of autoionization states owing to their intersection with bound-electron states.

Production of narrow nonlinear autoionizing-like resonances in a continuum by strong laser radiation

Yu. I. Geller, A. K. Popov

This paper investigates nonlinear processes in transitions to the continuum, and their manifestations in the photoabsorption, polarization, and angular distribution of the electrons, as well as in the nonlinear susceptibility in the case of frequency gases. Change of photoabsorption line shape by strong laser radiation upon transition to the continuum is examined. Conditions for the appearance of an induced autoionizing-like resonance in absorption are described, and allowance for the energy dependence of the matrix elements of the transitions to the continuum are examined. A discussion of narrow nonlinear resonances in ionization and recombination is presented. Induction of nonlinear resonances in a continuum when strong/radiation interacts with several close-lying discrete states is described. A presentation is given on the use of laser to induce nonlinear autoionizinglike resonances in a continuum to generate coherent radiation on the basis of frequency mixing in gases. Doppler broadening of nonlinear resonance is discussed. Phase modulation, frequency modulation and amplitude-phase modulation are outlined.

Controlling the parameters of short-wavelength radiation pulses using the interference of transitions to a continuum

Yu. I. Geller, D. E. Sovkov, A. T. Hakim’yanov

Specific features of the propagation of light pulses with frequency lying in the range of autoionization resonances of the medium are analyzed. It is shown that the interference nature of the autoionization spectra makes it possible to combine a strong frequency dispersion of the refractive index with small absorption when the radiation frequency approaches the spectral range of the "transparency window" of an isolated resonance or of a series of overlapped autoionization resonances. This allows one to control the time delay of the pulses and their group velocity. Depending on the parameters of the medium, the pulse group velocity may be maximally reduced by a factor of 10 4 –10 5 .

Influence of strong coupling and pulse delay in a system involving double autoionization resonance

Takashi Nakajima

We study the dynamics of a system involving double autoionization resonance. We find that a strong dipole coupling between two autoionizing states significantly modifies the properties of the medium. Variation of the linear susceptibility and ionization spectra into each continuum are numerically calculated for illustration. Effects of the temporal delay between pulses are also investigated in terms of the ionization yield into each continuum.

Laser-induced autoionizing and continuum structures: Line-shape study in the presence of continuum-continuum transitions

Stefano Cavalieri, R. Eramo, Roberto Buffa +1 more

We present a theoretical study of laser-induced autoionization and laser-induced continuum structures, performed with the aim of deriving predictions on the effect of continuum-continuum transitions on the resonance line shape. The model, developed as an extension of models introduced for the description of laser-induced autoionization and laser-induced continuum structures, on one hand, and for above-threshold ionization, on the other hand, provides quantitative predictions. For specific atomic systems, the line shapes of the structures are shown not to be affected by continuum-continuum transitions, in contrast with previously reported results.
