Approach to perturbation theory for box models

Abstract

We generalize a recently developed perturbation approach [F. M. Fern\'andez and E. A. Castro, Phys. Rev. A 46, 7288 (1992)], extending its applicability to a wider variety of separable quantum-mechanical problems. As an illustrative example, we consider a particle in a one-dimensional box with a finite potential wall perturbed by a linear potential and obtain the perturbation corrections to the wave function and energy of an arbitrary state in terms of the corresponding unperturbed quantities.

The particle in a box with a perturbation

Francisco Marcelo Fernández

We apply perturbation theory to the particle in a box with a potential energy function and derive exact expressions for the perturbation corrections to the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues. We show closed-form results in terms of the quantum number for the linear potential and analyse the convergence properties of the perturbation series.

Exact perturbation theory for quantum-mechanical systems within boxes

Francisco Marcelo Fernández, Eduardo Alberto Castro

We apply perturbation theory to the Schr\"odinger equation for a system caged in a one-dimensional box with impenetrable walls and show how to obtain the perturbation corrections to both the energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in a systematic exact way when the potential function within the box is a polynomial. As an illustrative example we consider a linear potential obtaining analytic expressions for the perturbation corrections in terms of the quantum number.

Generalization of Bandlimited Functions and Applications to Quantum Probability Distributions

Leon Cohen

Bandlimited functions are functions whose Fourier transform is confined to a finite band of frequencies. We generalize this concept to representations other than the Fourier transform and show that this leads to a variety of inequalities in arbitrary representations. Several special cases are considered, including frequency, dilation, and the chirplet transform, among others. Examples are given to illustrate each result. We apply the results to quantum mechanical wave functions and probability distributions. For bounded momentum wave functions, we obtain explicit bounds on the position wave function and its derivatives, as well as bounds on the position probability distribution. We also consider the dual problem in which the position wave function is bounded, as in the case of a particle in a box with an arbitrary wave function, and obtain bounds on the corresponding momentum wave function and momentum probability distribution. The case of wave functions that are sums of a finite number of energy eigenfunctions is also developed, and bounds on the associated probability distributions are obtained. A number of specific examples are considered, including a truncated Gaussian wave function and a quantum bump wave function.

Explicit Solutions for N-Dimensional Schrodinger Equations with Position-Dependent Mass

B. Gönül, M. Koçak

With the consideration of spherical symmetry for the potential and mass function, one-dimensional solutions of non-relativistic Schrodinger equations with spatially varying effective mass are successfully extended to arbitrary dimensions within the frame of recently developed elegant non-perturbative technique, where the BenDaniel-Duke effective Hamiltonian in one-dimension is assumed like the unperturbed piece, leading to well-known solutions, whereas the modification term due to possible use of other effective Hamiltonians in one-dimension and, together with, the corrections coming from the treatments in higher dimensions are considered as an additional term like the perturbation. Application of the model and its generalization for the completeness are discussed.
