Abstract

The results of an experimental investigation of low-temperature optical spectra and phase relaxation of electronic excitations of Pr3+ impurity ions in a Y2SiO5 crystal are reported. It is established that at low temperatures spectral lines are broadened by a mechanism that is uncharacteristic for crystals and is due to the interaction of impurity ions with two-level systems. The constants characterizing the interaction of Pr3+ impurity ions with phonons and two-level systems are found.

Based on the investigation of the temperature dependence of the two-pulse phonon echo amplitude on the 3H4 3Po resonant optical transition of the Pr3+ doped ions in the Y2SiO5 crystal, unusual for crystals, low-temperature mechanisms of Pr3+ spectral line broadening caused by the interaction of doped ions with TLS have been found. The constants characterizing the interaction of the doped Pr3+ ions with phonons and TLS have been determined.

New channels of photon echo relaxation in Y2SiO5:Pr3+ and LaF3:Pr3+ crystals

Yu. V. Malyukin

Experimental results on the investigation of low-temperature optical absorption spectra and temperature dependence of the photon echo (PE) amplitude signal in Y2SiO5:Pr3+ and LaF3:Pr3+ crystals at the transition H43(0)−3P0 of the Pr3+ ion are presented. It is shown that additional relaxation channels exist for PE in addition to the known phonon mechanisms. This is associated in a LaF3:Pr3+ crystal with the temperature variation of dipole moment at the Pr3+ ion transition. In a Y2SiO5:Pr3+ crystal, this is due to the thermally activated transitions for the Pr3+ ion between nonequivalent positions in the crystal lattice.

Anomalous dephasing of optical transitions of a Pr3+ ion in Y2SiO5 crystal

Yu. V. Malyukin, N. L. Pogrebnyak, V. P. Seminozhenko

The temperature drops in the photon echo intensity have been studied for the first time in the low-symmetry impurity crystal Y2SiO5:Pr3+ in the temperature range 4.2–20 K on the resonance transitions 3P0–3H4 and 1D2–3H4 of the Pr3+ ion. It is shown that the obtained results can be interpreted by using the familiar mechanisms of dephasing of optical transitions in impurity ions.

Investigation of interaction of optical centers Pr 3+ in a Y 2 SiO 5 :Pr 3+ crystal

N. V. Znamensky, Evgenii A Petrenko, T. G. Yukina +2 more

In a Y2SiO5:Pr3+ crystal characterized by two non-equivalent Pr3+ optical centers, the interaction mechanisms between Pr3+ ions as well as between Pr3+ ions and a crystal lattice have been studied. It has been shown that along with the electron-phonon interaction, the interaction between Pr3+ ions and two-level systems made an additional contribution to the homogeneous linewidth of the 3H4↔3P0 optical transition. Two different mechanisms of the Pr3+ interionic coupling have been found. The first mechanism is associated with a dipole-dipole interaction between non-equivalent Pr3+ optical centers, while the other one is governed by a cooperative cross relaxation of the excitation energy among the same type Pr3+ optical centers.

In this paper the results of experimental investigation of temperature dependence of two-pulse photon echo amplitude in a Y2SiO5:Pr3+ crystal are presented. The new dephasing mechanism, connected with thermal-activated transitions of Pr3+ ion between nonequivalent positions in the lattice site, is used to explain the peculiarities observed experimentally.

Study of the atomic dynamics of nanoclusters Y2SiO5:Pr3+by the confocal fluorescent microscopy

Yu. V. Malyukin, P.N. Zhmurin, Е. С. Сыркин +2 more

The system under consideration consists of a Pr3+ ion placed into a nanodimensional Y2SiO5 crystal (∼20 nm), which rests on a glass substrate. The spectrum and attenuation of the fluorescence of the Pr3+ ion have been studied by the method of confocal fluorescent microscopy. The rapid electron relaxation in J-multiplets of rare earth impurity ions split by the crystal field (for a usual bulk crystal τ∼10–9–10–12 sec) is shown to be suppressed in the nanodimensional crystal of Y2SiO5:Pr3+. For the excited Stark components of 1D2 multiplet, the electron relaxation appears to be more than 104 times suppressed, while an average splitting of the 1D2 multiplet by the crystal field of ligands is 200 cm–1. The observed phenomena strongly depends on the interaction of the Y2SiO5:Pr3+ cluster with the substrate and the surrounding (‘matrix’). Experimental results and theoretical calculations show the noticeble changes in the structure of vibrational spectrum and the density of vibrational states of the nanodimensional Y2SiO5:Pr3+ crystal.
