Abstract

An optical regeneration scheme based on non-degenerate phase-sensitive amplification in highly-nonlinear fibers is proposed. The regenerator exhibits significant amplitude and phase noise suppression properties and eliminates the need for precise phase and frequency locking with the input signal.

All-optical regeneration of differential phase-shift keyed signals based on phase-sensitive amplification

Kevin Croussore, Cheol-Hwan Kim, Guifang Li

All-optical regeneration of differential phase-shift keyed signals based on phase-sensitive amplification in a nonlinear fiber Sagnac interferometer is described. Nearly ideal phase regeneration can be achieved in the undepleted pump regime, with output differential phase noise limited only by fast fluctuations of the pump phase relative to the DPSK signal. Operating in the depleted pump regime offers the possibility of simultaneously regenerating both phase and amplitude information of DPSK signals while providing low noise, phase-sensitive gain.

We present recent advances in phase-sensitive amplification technology and its application to the regeneration of phase-encoded signals. Using a combination of parametric effects in fibers and optical injection locking of lasers, it is possible to observe phase regeneration in signals with multiple levels of phase encoding.

Investigation of an All-Optical Black-Box PPLN-PPLN BPSK Phase Regenerator

We investigate the phase squeezing performance of an all-optical black-box binary phase-shift keyed phase regenerator constructed from periodically-poled lithium-niobate (PPLN) waveguides. Phase regeneration is performed with different levels of phase noise and constant amplitude noise added to the phase modulated input. We experimentally show that, for moderate phase noise, unwanted phase-to-amplitude noise conversion can be minimized without degradation of the phase squeezing performance, by controlling the signal-to-pump power ratio at the input to the PPLN-based phase-sensitive regenerator.
