We discuss how transparency and population trapping effects are affected when a realistic continuum is involved. We consider the propagation of matched pulses in a \ensuremath{\Lambda}-like system, where the upper level is replaced by a continuum.
We show the possibility of transparency and soliton effects for an intense pulse propagating in a V-type medium in which two upper resonant sublevels experience fast field-induced decay due to incoherent coupling to an upper lying state or continuum. The transparency arises as a result of the combined action of population trapping on the sublevels leading to interference suppression of the relaxation channel, and coherent Rabi cycling induced by the laser field.
Abstract. The subject of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is reviewed in this paper. Emphasis is placed on the experimental work reported in this ®eld since 1990. Theoretical work is also covered, although it is not intended to review all the very numerous recent theoretical treatments on this topic. The basic physical ideas behind EIT are elucidated. The relation of EIT to other processes involving laser-induced atomic coherence, such as coherent population trapping, coherent adiabatic population transfer and lasing without inversion, is discussed. Experimental work is described covering the following topics: EIT with pulsed and continuous-wave sources, lasing without inversion, pulse propagation in a laser dressed medium and EIT in nonlinear optical processes. A full set of references and a bibliography are included. 1.
Here, I discuss the interaction of two matched ultrashort pulses with a \ensuremath{\Lambda}-like system in which the upper intermediate state is replaced by a manifold of discrete states. Many of these states are simultaneously accessed by the broad bandwidth of the two excitation pulses. The equations of motion for the probability amplitudes of the levels involved in the excitation process are solved analytically in the quasi-impulsive regime. In this regime, the excitation pulses are made shorter than the characteristic time of the excited manifold; population is then transferred to the manifold without Rabi cycling. Under the appropriate conditions, this ``multi-\ensuremath{\Lambda}'' system can exhibit coherence effects such as coherent population trapping and electromagnetically induced transparency of one of the excitation pulses.
