On the propagation of electromagnetic pulses under the conditions of quasi-resonance

Abstract

A theory of quasi-resonance for the model of atoms with an arbitrary number of levels is developed by the method of unitary transformation without recourse to Bloch’s equations. Corrections to the results known from the theory of adiabatic following, which refine these results and take into account dispersion of the nonlinear response of the resonant system, are obtained. The condition for quasi-resonance with a single atomic transition is shown to impose stringent limitations on the form of the nonlinear evolution equation for the electric field envelope of the pulse with dispersion of the nonlinear response taken into account, which prohibit the reduction of the equation indicated to familiar, fully integrable systems.

Propagation of ultrashort electromagnetic pulses in a Kerr medium with impurity atoms under quasi-resonance conditions

Askhat M Basharov, Andrei I. Maimistov

The study of the propagation of an electromagnetic ultrashort pulse in a Kerr medium with impurity atoms under quasi-resonance conditions is reported, which demonstrates the efficiency of the unitary transformation method in nonlinear optics. An equation is derived, which differs from the known equations describing the evolution of a pulse envelope and takes into account the dispersion of the nonlinear response and the dispersion of group velocities.

Ultrashort optical pulse propagation in Kerr medium with quasi-resonant impurities

Ashat M. Basharov, Andrei I. Maimistov

A nonlinear evolution equation describing an ultrashort optical pulse propagation under quasi-resonant condition is derived by the unitary transformation method. This method allowed us to obtain the terms which are not taken into account within the framework of the adiabatic following approximation. The analysis of the nonlinear evolution equation and example of its application are given.

Nonlinear propagation of polarized light pulses in a medium of atoms with degenerate energy levels: Adiabatic approach

Valeriy I. Yudin, M. Yu. Basalaev, Denis V. Brazhnikov +1 more

We develop a general method allowing one to construct the consistent theory of light pulse propagation through an atomic medium in arbitrary nonlinear regime with respect to the field strength, taking into account the light polarization, temporal (frequency), and spatial dispersions. The method is based on the reduced Maxwell equation, atomic density matrix formalism, and adiabatic approximation. In order to demonstrate the efficiency of our method we investigate in detail the case of propagation of the pulses under conditions of coherent population trapping in a medium of two-level atoms with degenerate energy levels. Equations describing the evolution of various field parameters are derived. It is shown that pulses of ellipticity and spatial orientation of polarization ellipse propagate with slowing. Analytical expressions for the slowing factor are obtained. Previously unknown effects of the stimulated phase modulation and the generation of a phase pilot pulse by the variation of spatial orientation of the polarization ellipse are predicted.

Coherent propagation of two-photon quasi-resonant pulses in a medium of multi-level atoms

Farhad H. M. Faisal

Coherent propagation of a circularly polarized pulse which is two-photon quasi-resonant with a medium of multi-level atoms is considered in the adiabatic following limit. The relevant pair of non-linear coupled partial differential equations are solved exactly for arbitrary pulse shapes. The development of the envelope and the phase of the pulse as it propagates through the medium is described analytically. Perturbation theoretical results are shown to apply only for small intensity or small distance of propagation or both. Qualitatively different results apply for higher intensities and longer distances of propagation. These include strong self-phase-modulation effects as well as reshaping of the pulse envelope.

Some models of propagation of extremely short electromagnetic pulses in a nonlinear medium

Andrei I. Maimistov

Some cases of model media considered in this paper allow analytical solutions to nonlinear wave equations to be found and the time dependence of the electric field strength to be determined in the explicit form for arbitrarily short electromagnetic pulses. Our analysis does not employ any assumptions concerning a harmonic carrier wave or the variation rate of the field in such pulses. The class of models considered includes two-level resonance and quasi-resonance systems. Nonresonance media are analysed in terms of models of anharmonic oscillators — the Duffing and Lorentz models. In most cases, only particular solutions describing the stationary propagation of a video pulse (a unipolar transient of the electric field or a pulse including a small number of oscillations of the electric field around zero) can be found. These solutions correspond to sufficiently strong electromagnetic fields when the dispersion inherent in the medium is suppressed by nonlinear processes.

Role of nonlinear refraction in the generation of terahertz field pulses by light fields

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

The generation of microwave (terahertz) pulses without any envelope in a four-level quasi-resonant medium is considered. Two intense quasi-monochromatic laser fields lead to a partial upper-level population. Microwave field pulses cause the transition between these levels. For appropriately chosen scales, the evolution of the fields is shown to be described by the pseudo-spin evolution equations in a microwave field with the inclusion of nonlinear refraction caused by an adiabatic upper-level population. The evolution of terahertz field pulses is described outside the scope of the slow-envelope approximation. When a number of standard approximations are taken into account, this system of equations is shown to be equivalent to an integrable version of the generalized reduced Maxwell-Bloch equations or to the generalized three-wave mixing equations. The soliton solution found by the inverse scattering transform method is used as an example to show that nonlinear refraction leads to a strong compression of the microwave (terahertz) field soliton.
