Abstract

The strong electromagnetic coupling of two autoionizing states is experimentally investigated for the first time and is shown to lead to coherent population trapping resulting in a reduction of the ionization. The experimental observation of partial stabilization is supported by a theoretical analysis which reproduces the modification of the Fano profiles and indicates that the strong coupling of the two states leads to the trapping of the population in the ground state of the atom.

Investigation of a two-autoionizing-level system coupled by a strong laser field

The coherent resonant coupling of two autoionizing states of magnesium by an intense electromagnetic field is investigated experimentally by means of ionization and energy-selected photoelectron spectra probed from the ground state of the atom. The resulting effect of a drastic reduction in the ionization of the system is interpreted as the splitting of the two states achieved through their mixing by the field. A complete theoretical treatment of the problem employing the density matrix formalism is presented, reproducing the effects observed and explaining the phenomenon in terms of the relative populations of the states in the system.

Effects of coherent coupling of autoionizing states on multiphoton ionization

Natalia E. Karapanagioti, Dimitrios Charalambidis, Cornelis J. G. J. Uiterwaal +4 more

We present the experimental and theoretical investigation of the effects of the strong electromagnetic coupling of two autoionizing states (AIS's) on the photoionization properties of an atomic system. These effects are observed by probing the ladder system from the ground state of the atom through a weak two-photon transition to the region of the lower AIS. The experimental observation of the modification of the total ionization and partial photoelectron spectra at different wavelengths of the coupling and probe lasers are accurately reproduced by a theoretical analysis which uses a density-matrix approach. Both theory and experiment indicate a strong inhibition of the ionization of the system in the case when both lasers are resonant with the two atomic transitions, while displaying a rapidly varying asymmetry induced as the detuning between the two states and the fields increases. In the extreme case of a large detuning, two separate structures appear as distinct total ionization and photoelectron peaks. The above findings combined with the full theoretical treatment indicate that the phenomena observed are an experimental demonstration of ac Stark splitting between two AIS's. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Photoionization properties of an atom with two autoionizing states

Hong Guo, Gao‐xiang Li, Jin-sheng Peng

We have investigated the photoionization properties of an atom with a ladder coupling scheme involving two autoionizing states coupled to each other. The effects of the coherent coupling between two autoionizing states and between the low-lying autoionizing state and the continuum on the ionization yield are discussed. The conditions leading to atomic coherent population trapping and the coherent population trapping states are given explicitly.

Photoionization suppression by continuum coherence: Experiment and theory

We present experimental and theoretical results of a detailed study of laser-induced continuum structures (LICS's) in the photoionization continuum of helium out of the metastable state $2s{}^{1}{S}_{0}.$ The continuum dressing, with a 1064-nm laser, couples the same region of the continuum to the $4s{}^{1}{S}_{0}$ state. The experimental data, presented for a range of intensities, show pronounced ionization suppression (by as much as 70% with respect to the far-from-resonance value) as well as enhancement, in a Beutler-Fano resonance profile. This ionization suppression is a clear indication of population trapping mediated by coupling to a continuum. We present experimental results demonstrating the effect of pulse delay upon the LICS's, and for the behavior of LICS's for both weak and strong probe pulses. Simulations based upon numerical solution of the Schr\"odinger equation model the experimental results. The atomic parameters (Rabi frequencies and Stark shifts) are calculated using a simple model-potential method for the computation of the needed wave functions. The simulations of the LICS profiles are in excellent agreement with experiment. We also present an analytic formulation of pulsed LICS's. We show that in the case of a probe pulse shorter than the dressing one, the LICS profile is the convolution of the power spectra of the probe pulse with the usual Fano profile of stationary LICS's. We discuss some consequences of deviation from steady-state theory.

Autoionizing states of negative ions in strong resonant laser fields: The negative rubidium ion

Henrik Stapelfeldt, Philip Trøst Kristensen, Ulric B. Ljungblad +2 more

We have performed an experimental study of the atomic system ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, for which the ground state 5${\mathit{s}}^{2}$ is coupled to the autoionizing state 5${\mathit{p}}_{1/2}$6s by means of a strong resonant laser field. The investigations are based on irradiation of ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ with intense (I\ensuremath{\le}1.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{10}$ W/${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$) laser pulses of duration \ensuremath{\sim}1 ns. Single-photon detachment of ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ is suppressed due to the Fano interference between transitions directly to the continuum and transitions via the autoionizing state. In contrast, two-photon absorption is at the same time resonantly enhanced since no such destructive interference is present in this process. These observations constitute experimental evidence of general features predicted from theoretical considerations of autoionizing states in strong laser fields. Furthermore, we discuss the role of autoionizing states in multiphoton double-ionization processes. Electron spectroscopy has been used to show that double ionization of ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ primarily is the result of a sequential removal of the two electrons via an excited Rb state. The perspectives for direct two-electron ionization in negative ions are briefly discussed.
