Haldane Gap in the Spin-1/2 Double Chain Heisenberg Antiferromagnet -Numerical Diagonalization and Projector Monte Carlo Study-

Abstract

The properties of the spin-1/2 double chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet are studied by means of the numerical diagonalization and the projector Monte Carlo simulation. The model consists of the two spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic quantum Heisenberg chains coupled with each other via the ferromagnetic interchain coupling J ′ . It is shown that the first excited state has a gap for large enough J ′ . This gap continues to the Haldane gap in the limit J ′ →∞, where spins on the different chains form triplets on each site. On the other hand, the gap decreases rapidly between J ′ =1.0 and 0.6 and is undetectable for J ′ <0.6 within the present accuracy.

Haldane Gap in the Spin-1/2Double Chain Anisotropic Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Kazuo Hida

The double chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet with anisotropy is studied using the mapping onto the coupled anisotropic nonlinear σ model. This model consists of two anisotropic antiferromagnetic quantum Heisenberg chains with half-integer spin coupled with each other via the ferromagnetic interchain coupling J '. For small J ', our analysis suggests that J ' is an irrelevant parameter and consequently the two chains behave independently and no gap is generated. On the other hand, for large enough J ', the two chains behave as a single Heisenberg chain with integer spin which has a gap in the excitation spectrum. The expected behavior in the isotropic limit is also discussed.

Numerical solution of the spin-2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains using a projector method

Gang Sun

An efficient projector Monte Carlo method has been used to calculate the energies of the ground state and the first excited state, and hence the gap between them, of the spin-2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with linear sizes up to N=32. By direct extrapolation, we found that a Haldane gap exists, \ensuremath{\Delta}E=0.05, and the value of the ground-state energy per site is ${\mathit{e}}_{0}$=-4.7545 as N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}.

Numerical Solution of the spin-$\frac {1}{2}$ Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chains Using a Projector Method

An efficient projector method is proposed to calculate the energy gap between the ground, state and the first excited state of the spin- Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains. We exactly computed the two lowest-lying energies for the magnetization and the lowest-lying energy for on chains up to 16 spins. The lowest-lying energy stat6 for is a singlet ground state. The second lowest-lying energy state for and the lowest-lying energy states for are triplet degenerate, which are the first excited energy states. We also imposed the Monte Carlo technique to estimate the lowest-lying energies for both and 1 on longer chains up to 32 spins. We found that the singlet-triplet energy gap trends to zero as .

Heisenberg spin chains: Quantum-classical crossover and the Haldane conjecture

John B. Parkinson, J. C. Bonner, Gerhard H. Muller +2 more

A comprehensive investigation has been made of the spectral excitations and static properties of Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains of spin 1/2, 1, 3/2, and 2, using Lanczös, Bethe Ansatz, and Monte Carlo techniques. An unusual and unanticipated crossover mechanism for spin chains with 1/2≤S≤∞ has been discovered. The validity of the Haldane conjecture concerning the presence of a spectral excitation gap for integer-spin chains has been investigated by exact finite chains calculations of (a) the primary singlet-triplet excitation gap, (b) higher excitation gaps, and (c) the Fourier transform of the ground state correlation functions. A new Monte Carlo method has extended the spin-1 gap calculations to N=32.
