Optical absorption in strong-coupling-limit Hubbard models

Abstract

Exact finite-lattice results for the optical conductivity of Hubbard models near half-filling are compared with recent experimental data for the dopant- and photoinduced mid-infrared absorption of cuprate high-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ materials. An as yet unobserved photoinduced absorption feature in the 4--6 eV range is predicted.

Optical conductivity of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

The optical conductivity ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}}}_{1}$(\ensuremath{\omega}) of the two-dimensional Hubbard model on finite clusters of 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4 and \ensuremath{\surd}10 \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} \ensuremath{\surd}10 sites is reported. Experimental features found in the high-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ cuprate superconductors can be qualitatively reproduced by this model including the presence of mid-infrared spectral weight, a Drude peak whose intensity grows with doping and a total spectral weight that varies slowly as the system is doped away from half filling. We find that to reproduce qualitatively the main experimental features of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}}}_{1}$(\ensuremath{\omega}), we need to work with a coupling constant of the order of the bandwidth, i.e., U/t\ensuremath{\sim}8--10. Results for the negative-U Hubbard model are included for comparison.

Optical conductivity of a doped Mott insulator: The interplay between correlation and electron-phonon interaction

G. De Filippis, V. Cataudella, Andrei S. Mishchenko +2 more

The optical conductivity (OC) of cuprates is studied theoretically in the low-density limit of the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model taking into account the hole-lattice coupling. By developing a limited phonon basis exact diagonalization method capable of treating the lattice of largest size ever considered $(4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4)$, we are able to discern the fine features of the mid-infrared (MIR) part of the OC revealing a three-peak structure. The two lowest peaks are observed in experiments and the highest one is tacitly resolved in moderately doped cuprates. Comparison of OC with the results of semianalytic approaches and detailed analysis of the calculated isotope effect indicate that the middle-energy MIR peak is of mostly magnetic origin while the lowest MIR band originates from the scattering of holes by phonons.

Optical conductivity in thet-Jmodel: Slave-boson, large-Ntechnique

Yunkyu Bang, Gabriel Kotliar

We study the real part of the optical conductivity in the t-J model using the slave-boson technique and the large-N expansion to the next-to-leading order in 1/N. The conductivity falls off at a slower rate than predicted by the Drude theory due to the coupling to the low-energy spin excitation. The absorptions from the mid-infrared (MIR) range to higher frequency (\ensuremath{\sim}1 eV) arise from the incoherent motion of the charge carrier. We compare our results to finite-cluster exact-diagonalization studies and to experimental studies in the copper oxide system.

Optical absorption of strongly correlated half-filled Mott-Hubbard chains

Florian Gebhard, K. Bott, M. Scheidler +2 more

In this last of three articles on the optical absorption of electrons in a half-filled Peierls-distorted chain we address the dimerized extended Hubbard model in the limit of a large on-site interaction U. When the Hubbard interaction is large both compared to the band width W and the nearest-neighbor interaction V the charge dynamics is properly described by the Harris-Lange model. This model can be exactly mapped onto a model of free spinless Fermions in parallel (Hubbard-)bands of width W which are eventually Peierls-split. To determine the coherent absorption features at low temperatures we design and employ the “no-recoil approximation ” in which we assume that the momentum transfer to the spin degrees of freedom can only be ∆qS = 0 or ∆qS = π/a during an optical excitation. We present explicit analytical results for the optical absorption in the presence of a lattice dimerization δ and a nearest-neighbor interaction V for the Néel and dimer state. We find

Dynamic conductivity of strongly correlated electrons: The Hubbard model on a cubic lattice

L. Tan, J. Callaway

The frequency-dependent (optical) conductivity of the Hubbard model on a three-dimensional cubic lattice is studied through calculations on a small cluster. The interaction strength is varied between the weak- and strong-coupling limits. Results are reported for the half-filled band, and for small hole dopings away from half filling. The formation of a Hubbard gap is observed. Results are related to aspects of the current discussion of the metal-insulator transition in bulk systems.
