Abstract

We calculate the self-energy and thermodynamic potential of the two-dimensional Hubbard model in a propagator-renormalized conserving approximation, for lattices as large as 128\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}128 and temperatures as low as 0.002 times the bandwidth. For densities near quarter filling we see no evidence of deviations from the predictions of Fermi-liquid theory, such as those expected in a Luttinger liquid or a marginal Fermi liquid.

Observation of Fermi-liquid behavior in the two-dimensional Hubbard model for self-consistent perturbation theory

S. Wermbter

I present a numerical treatment for the retarded self-energy in two dimensions (2D), which is formally exact for the frequency and the momentum sums occurring in perturbation theory with respect to the Coulomb interaction U. In this frequency- and momentum-renormalization-group technique, which allows the sequential elimination of regions of high frequencies and momenta, I focus on the 2D fluctuation-exchange approximation for the Hubbard model. I present results for the self-energy and the spectral density down to temperatures t=${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}4}$/t (the next neighbor hopping amplitude). The obtained result shows evidence for a Fermi-liquid phase for bandfillings n near half filling for U/t=2 to U/t=8 for T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0.

Fermi-liquid quasi-particles and d x 2-y 2-superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

S. Wermbter

A frequency- and momentum-renormalization-group acceleration together with an analytical approach is used to obtain the retarded Green's function in the self-consistent and conserving fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation for the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the normal state and in the superconducting state. The analytical expressions for this approach are given. For band-fillings near half filling the self-energy in the normal state exhibits Fermi-liquid behaviour for, low temperatures and frequencies near the chemical potential, if the momentum is chosen near the Fermi-surface. However due to the presence of large many body effects the observed Fermi-liquid region near the chemical potential and near the Fermi-surface is very small. Results for the single particle density of states, the occupation number and the spectral function are presented. The superconducting state with symmetry is obtained for U = 2 to U = 6 and a (U, n)-phase diagram for the transition temperature Tc is presented. A maximum Tc/t of 0.0275 is obtained for U = 6 near half filling.

Incipient Antiferromagnetism and Low-Energy Excitations in the Half-Filled Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

J. J. Deisz, D. W. Hess, Joseph W. Serene

We present single-particle and thermodynamic properties of the half-filled single-band Hubbard model in 2D calculated in the self-consistent fluctuation exchange approximation. The low-energy excitations at moderate temperatures and small $U$ are quasiparticles with a short lifetime. As the temperature is lowered, coupling to evolving spin fluctuations leads to the extinction of these quasiparticles, signaled by a weak pseudogap in the density of states and by a positive slope in $\mathrm{Re}\ensuremath{\Sigma}({\mathbf{k}}_{F},\ensuremath{\varepsilon})$ and a local maximum in $|\mathrm{Im}\ensuremath{\Sigma}({\mathbf{k}}_{F},\ensuremath{\varepsilon})|$ at $\ensuremath{\varepsilon}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$. We explain these results using a simple spin-fluctuation model.

Numerical evidence of Luttinger- and Fermi-liquid behavior in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Sandro Sorella

The two-dimensional Hubbard model with a single spin-up electron interacting with a finite density of spin-down electrons is studied by use of the quantum Monte Carlo technique, the standard second-order perturbation theory and a very good variational wave function introduced recently by Edwards. We also present a new conjugate gradient scheme for the evaluation of this variational state. We performed simulations up to 242 sites at U/t=4 reaching the zero-temperature properties with no ``fermion-sign problem'' and found a surprisingly good accuracy of the Edwards state at low density or low doping. The conjugate gradient method was then applied to the system up to 3698 sites and infinite U. Fermi-liquid theory seems to remain stable in two dimensions for all cases studied with the exception of the half-filling case where a Luttinger-like behavior survives in the Hubbard model, yielding a vanishing quasiparticle weight in the thermodynamic limit.

Spectral Properties and Stability in the Two-Dimensional Lattice-Hubbard Model

Carlos Alberto Lamas

The two-dimensional Hubbard model on the square lattice is studied in the presence of lattice distortions in the adiabatic approximation. The self energy is computed within perturbation theory up to second order, which provides a way for studying the quasiparticle dispersion. We compute numerically the second order contribution to the self-energy using a standard Fast Fourier Transform Algorithm for finite system sizes. The stability of the lattice distortions is investigated and a schematic phase diagram is drawn. The Fermi surface is analyzed for densities near to half filling, the presence of lattice distortion change some spectral properties of the model and gives an anisotropic interacting FS. The spectral function is calculated along several lines in momentum space and the renormalized quasiparticle dispersion is obtained. The behavior of the density of states is shown for different values of the intrasite repulsion U in the different phases.

Low-energy excitations in an incipient antiferromagnet

D. W. Hess, J. J. Deisz, Joseph W. Serene

We present fully self-consistent calculations in the fluctuation exchange approximation for the half-filled Hubbard model in two dimensions. A non-Fermi-liquid state evolves with decreasing temperature in this self-consistent model of coupled spin fluctuations and quasiparticles. The mean-field phase transition to long-range antiferromagnetic order is suppressed and we find no evidence of a phase transition to long-range magnetic order. We show that the real part of the self-energy at zero energy shows a positive slope and the imaginary part of the self-energy shows a local minimum. The scale of this structure is set by the zero-temperature gap in mean-field theory. The growth of spin fluctuations is reflected in the evolution of sharply peaked structure in the spin fluctuation propagator around zero energy and Q = (π, π). We present calculations for the Hubbard model in one dimension in a two-particle self-consistent parquet approximation. A second-moment sum rule suggests that vertex corrections to the self-energy are responsible for the greater accuracy of the parquet approximation compared with other self-consistent perturbation theories.
