Abstract

We show that the existence of correlated pairs produced by a down-conversion process in a Bose-Einstein condensate can be probed systematically by exploiting the competition between Beliaev damping and a Raman coupling.

Correlated pair excitations in Bose Einstein condensates in the presence of a Raman coupling

J. Rogel-Salazar, G.H.C. New, Keith R. Burnett

We show that it is possible to determine the existence of correlated pairs produced in a down-conversion process within an atomic Bose–Einstein condensate in a systematic manner. This is achieved by measuring the competition between a one-particle transition, induced by an external field, and a two-particle transition arising naturally due to atomic collisions.

Squeezed excitations in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

J. Rogel-Salazar, G.H.C. New, Seok Jin Choi +1 more

Summary form only given. The microscopic theory of interacting Bose gases developed more than 50 years ago by Bogoliubov plays an essential role in the description of these systems. However, processes such as Beliaev damping are not predicted by the mean field approximation. Recently, the observation of Beliaev damping for a scissors mode of a BEC of rubidium atoms has been reported allowing the consideration of theory beyond the mean field. The Beliaev damping process is, in a sense, analogous to parametric down conversion of light, where one photon incident on a nonlinear crystal with second order susceptibility is split into two new photons of lower frequencies. Parametric down conversion has long been considered as an important source of squeezed states. In this paper we point out that similar processes can be observed in BEC.

Experimental Observation of Beliaev Coupling in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

E. Hodby, Onofrio M. Maragò, Gerald Hechenblaikner +1 more

We report the first experimental observation of Beliaev coupling between collective excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensed gas. Beliaev coupling is not predicted by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and so this experiment tests condensate theory beyond the mean field approximation. Measurements of the amplitude of a high frequency scissors mode show that the Beliaev process transfers energy to a lower-lying mode and then back and forth between these modes, unlike Landau processes which lead to a monotonic decrease in amplitude. To enhance the Beliaev process we adjusted the geometry of the magnetic trapping potential to give a frequency ratio of 2 to 1 between the two scissors modes.

Cavity-assisted quasiparticle damping in a Bose-Einstein condensate

S. A. Gardiner, Klaus M. Gheri, P. Zoller

We consider an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate held within an optical cavity and interacting with laser fields. We show how the interaction of the cavity mode with the condensate can cause energy due to excitations to be coupled to a lossy cavity mode, which then decays, thus damping the condensate. We show how to choose parameters for damping specific excitations, and how to target a range of different excitations to potentially produce extremely cold condensates.
