Exact coherent state transition elements for the squeezed harmonic oscillator

Abstract

The squeezed harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian H = ωa†a + αa2 + α*a†2 is analysed, where a† and a are harmonic oscillator creation and annihilation operators, ω is real, and α is a time independent constant. For the case that ω2 − 4|α|2 > 0 it is known that the Hamiltonian possesses real and positive eigenvalues. The exact eigenstates are constructed by using a Bogoliubov transformation to express them in terms of the algebra and states of the harmonic oscillator. Known properties of these states are reviewed and new results are derived. Modified coherent states are constructed from the exact eigenstates and shown to yield a unit projection operator for the original harmonic oscillator Hilbert space via generalized Gaussian integrals. Transition elements between harmonic oscillator coherent states are then evaluated exactly by using the properties of the modified coherent state projection operator.

Transition elements for a non-Hermitian quadratic Hamiltonian

Mark S. Swanson

The non-Hermitian quadratic Hamiltonian H=ωa†a+αa2+βa†2 is analyzed, where a† and a are harmonic oscillator creation and annihilation operators and ω, α, and β are real constants. For the case that ω2−4αβ⩾0, it is shown using operator techniques that the Hamiltonian possesses real and positive eigenvalues. A generalized Bogoliubov transformation allows the energy eigenstates to be constructed from the algebra and states of the harmonic oscillator. The eigenstates are shown to possess an imaginary norm for a large range of the parameter space. Finding the orthonormal dual space allows the inner product to be redefined using the complexification procedure of Bender et al. for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. Transition probabilities governed by H are shown to be manifestly unitary when the complexification procedure is followed. A specific transition element between harmonic oscillator states is evaluated for both the Hermitian and non-Hermitian cases to identify the differences in time evolution.

Anharmonic oscillators and generalized squeezed states

Davood Afshar, Mojtaba Jafarpour

We present a new method to study the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of anharmonic oscillators. It involves a new class of Bogoliubov transformations and leads to the introduction of k-photon coherent states. We consider the Hamiltonians for the simple harmonic and anharmonic oscillators as the two generators of a Lie algebra, whose other generators may be found exactly, or up to any desired order of the perturbation parameter involved. An element of this Lie group, turning out to be the multi-photon operator, transforms the anharmonic Hamiltonian to the harmonic one, thus facilitating the calculation of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the former. The transformation of the ordinary annihilation and creation operators leads to generalized ones, corresponding to generalized oscillation modes, and also helps us out to introduce multi-photon coherent states. We specifically consider four-photon coherent states in detail and study time dependent position and momentum uncertainties in these states.

Coherent and squeezed states of quantum Heisenberg algebras

Nibaldo Alvarez-Moraga

Starting from deformed quantum Heisenberg Lie algebras some realizations are given in terms of the usual creation and annihilation operators of the standard harmonic oscillator. Then the associated algebra eigenstates are computed and give rise to new classes of deformed coherent and squeezed states. They are parametrized by deformed algebra parameters and suitable redefinitions of them as paragrassmann numbers. Some properties of these deformed states are also analysed.

Multi-photon coherent states via a Lie algebra method

Davood Afshar, Mojtaba Jafarpour

Using Lie algebra methods, we find a new class of Bogoliubov transformations which generalize the notion of squeezed states. The Hamiltonians for the simple harmonic and anharmonic oscillators, turn out to be the generators of a Lie group, whose other generators may be found exactly, or up to any desired order of the perturbation parameter. An element of this Lie group, which is realized as the multi-photon operator, transforms the anharmonic Hamiltonian to the harmonic one. The transformation of the ordinary annihilation and creation operators under this unitary transformation leads to the introduction of multi-photon coherent states. We specifically consider four-photon coherent states in detail and study the time dependent position and momentum uncertainties in these states.

Time-evolution of squeezed coherent states of a generalized quantum parametric oscillator

Şirin A. Büyükaşık, Zehra Çayiç

Time evolution of squeezed coherent states for a quantum parametric oscillator with the most general self-adjoint quadratic Hamiltonian is found explicitly. For this, we use the unitary displacement and squeeze operators in coordinate representation and the evolution operator obtained by the Wei-Norman Lie algebraic approach. Then, we analyze squeezing properties of the wave packets according to the complex parameter of the squeeze operator and the time-variable parameters of the Hamiltonian. As an application, we construct all exactly solvable generalized quantum oscillator models classically corresponding to a driven simple harmonic oscillator. For each model, defined according to the frequency modification in position space, we describe explicitly the squeezing and displacement properties of the wave packets. This allows us to see the exact influence of all parameters and make a basic comparison between the different models.

Elementary derivation of the quantum propagator for the harmonic oscillator

Jiushu Shao

Operator algebra techniques are employed to derive the quantum evolution operator for the harmonic oscillator. The derivation begins with the construction of the annihilation and creation operators and the determination of the wave function for the coherent state as well as its time-dependent evolution, and ends with the transformation of the propagator in a mixed position-coherent-state representation to the desired one in configuration space. Throughout the entire procedure, besides elementary operator manipulations, it is only necessary to solve linear differential equations and to calculate Gaussian integrals.
