Equation of state of cold atoms: A lowest-order-constrained variational study of systems with large non- s -wave scattering lengths

Abstract

Dilute Fermi systems with large $s$-wave scattering length ${a}_{s}$ exhibit universal properties if the interparticle spacing ${r}_{0}$ greatly exceeds the range of the underlying two-body interaction potential. In this regime, ${r}_{0}$ is the only relevant length scale and observables such as the energy per particle depend only on ${r}_{0}$ (or, equivalently, the energy ${E}_{\mathrm{FG}}$ of the free Fermi gas). This paper investigates Bose and Fermi systems with nonvanishing angular momentum $l$ using the lowest order constrained variational method. We focus on the regime where the generalized scattering length becomes large and determine the relevant length scales. For Bose gases with large generalized scattering lengths, we obtain simple expressions for the energy per particle in terms of an $l$-dependent length scale ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{l}$, which depends on the range of the underlying two-body potential and the average interparticle spacing. We discuss possible implications for dilute two-component Fermi systems with finite $l$. Furthermore, we determine the equation of state of liquid and gaseous bosonic helium.

Equation of state of atomic systems beyond s-wave determined by the lowest order constrained variational method: Large scattering length limit

Ryan M. Kalas, D. Blume

Dilute Fermi systems with large s-wave scattering length a_s exhibit universal properties if the interparticle spacing r_o greatly exceeds the range of the underlying two-body interaction potential. In this regime, r_o is the only relevant length scale and observables such as the energy per particle depend only on r_o (or, equivalently, the energy E_{FG} of the free Fermi gas). This paper investigates Bose and Fermi systems with non-vanishing angular momentum l using the lowest order constrained variational method. We focus on the regime where the generalized scattering length becomes large and determine the relevant length scales. For Bose gases with large generalized scattering lengths, we obtain simple expressions for the energy per particle in terms of a l-dependent length scale ξ_l, which depends on the range of the underlying two-body potential and the average interparticle spacing. We discuss possible implications for dilute two-component Fermi systems with finite l. Furthermore, we determine the equation of state of liquid and gaseous bosonic helium.

The scattering length effect on properties of cold interacting Fermion systems in LOCV framework

Ebrahim Gholami Hatam, H. R. Moshfegh

The properties of cold interacting Fermi gases in terms of scattering length are investigated. The scattering length is calculated by exact solution of Schrödinger equation. A Cosine hyperbolic potential with variable strength is employed in this study. The different interaction regimes are provided by choosing different strength of potential, which are characterized by an inverse of S-wave scattering length and Fermi wave number. The energy per particle for 3He system is calculated within the lowest order constrained variational (LOCV) method. It is found that the bound bosonic pairs as well as bound molecules are formed at positive scattering length, only by considering two-body interactions.

Equation of state of Bose gases beyond the universal regime

Jordi Pera, Jordi Boronat

The equation of state of dilute Bose gases, in which the energy only depends on the s -wave scattering length, is rather unknown beyond the universal limit. We have carried out a set of diffusion Monte Carlo calculations up to gas parameters of 10 − 2 to explore how the departure from the universality emerges. Using different model potentials, we calculate the energies of the gas in an exact way, within some statistical noise, and report the results as a function of the three relevant scattering parameters: the s -wave scattering length a 0 , the s -wave effective range r 0 , and the p -wave scattering length a 1 . If the effective range is not large, we observe universality in terms of a 0 and r 0 up to gas parameters of 10 − 2 . If r 0 grows, the regime of universality in these two parameters is reduced and effects of a 1 start to be observed. In the ( a 0 , r 0 ) universal regime we propose an analytical law that reproduces fairly well the exact energies. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Hyperspherical lowest-order constrained-variational approximation to resonant Bose-Einstein condensates

Michelle Wynne Sze, A. G. Sykes, D. Blume +1 more

We study the ground-state properties of a system of $N$ harmonically trapped bosons of mass $m$ interacting with two-body contact interactions, from small to large scattering lengths. This is accomplished in a hyperspherical coordinate system that is flexible enough to describe both the overall scale of the gas and two-body correlations. By adapting the lowest-order constrained-variational method, we are able to semiquantitatively attain Bose-Einstein condensate ground-state energies even for gases with infinite scattering length. In the large-particle-number limit, our method provides analytical estimates for the energy per particle ${E}_{0}/N\ensuremath{\approx}2.5{N}^{1/3}\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\omega}$ and two-body contact ${C}_{2}/N\ensuremath{\approx}16{N}^{1/6}\sqrt{m\ensuremath{\omega}/\ensuremath{\hbar}}$ for a Bose gas on resonance, where $\ensuremath{\omega}$ is the trap frequency.

Trapped two-component Fermi gases with up to six particles: Energetics, structural properties, and molecular condensate fraction

D. Blume, K. M. Daily

We investigate small equal-mass two-component Fermi gases under external spherically symmetric confinement in which atoms with opposite spins interact through a short-range two-body model potential. We employ a non-perturbative microscopic framework, the stochastic variational approach, and determine the system properties as functions of the interspecies s -wave scattering length a s , the orbital angular momentum L of the system, and the numbers N 1 and N 2 of spin-up and spin-down atoms (with N 1 − N 2 = 0 or 1 and N ⩽ 6 , where N = N 1 + N 2 ). At unitarity, we determine the energies of the five- and six-particle systems for various ranges r 0 of the underlying two-body model potential and extrapolate to the zero-range limit. These energies serve as benchmark results that can be used to validate and assess other numerical approaches. We also present structural properties such as the pair distribution function and the radial density. Furthermore, we analyze the one-body and two-body density matrices. A measure for the molecular condensate fraction is proposed and applied. Our calculations show explicitly that the natural orbitals and the momentum distributions of atomic Fermi gases approach those characteristic for a molecular Bose gas if the s -wave scattering length a s , a s > 0 , is sufficiently small.

Cold Bose Gases near Feshbach Resonances

Yeong E. Kim, Alexander L. Zubarev

The lowest order constrained variational method [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 210403 (2002)] has been generalized for a dilute (in the sense that the range of interatomic potential is small compared with inter-particle spacing) uniform gas of bosons near the Feshbach resonance using the multi-channel zero-range potential model. The method has been applied to Na (F=1, m_F=1) atoms near the $B_0=907$G Feshbach resonance. It is shown that at high densities, there are significant differences between our results for the real part of energy per particle and the one-channel zero-range potential approximation. We point out the possibility of stabilization of the uniform con densate for the case of negative scattering length.
