Quantum theory of cold bosonic atoms in optical lattices

Dagim Tilahun, R. A. Duine, Allan H. MacDonald

Ultracold atoms in optical lattices undergo a quantum phase transition from a superfluid to a Mott insulator as the lattice potential depth is increased. We describe an approximate theory of interacting bosons in optical lattices which provides a qualitative description of both superfluid and insulator states. The theory is based on a change of variables in which the boson coherent state amplitude is replaced by an effective potential which promotes phase coherence between different number states on each lattice site. It is illustrated here by applying it to uniform and fully frustrated lattice cases but is simple enough that it can be applied to spatially inhomogeneous lattice systems.

Probing States in the Mott Insulator Regime in the Case of Coherent Bosons Trapped in an Optical Lattice

David C K Roberts, Keith R. Burnett

We propose a method to probe states in the Mott insulator regime produced from a condensate in an optical lattice. We consider a system in which we create time-dependent number fluctuations in a given site by turning off the atomic interactions and lowering the potential barriers on a nearly pure Mott state to allow the atoms to tunnel between sites. We calculate the expected interference pattern and number fluctuations from such a system and show that one can potentially observe a deviation from a pure Mott state. We also discuss a method in which to detect these number fluctuations using time-of-flight imaging.

Superfluid–Mott-insulator transition of dipolar bosons in an optical lattice

Zhengwei Xie, Weixi Liu

The superfluid--Mott-insulator phase transition of dipolar bosons in optical lattice is analyzed. By using the Bogoliubov approach and decoupling approximation, the energy spectrum and zero-temperature phase diagram of dipolar bosonic atoms in an optical lattice are obtained analytically. The results show that in these systems the superfluid--Mott-insulator phase transition can be induced by tuning the dipole-dipole interaction and the position of the phase boundary can be moved when the on-site interaction is varied. Corresponding to a large on-site interaction, the dipole-dipole interaction is attractive near the critical point of the superfluid--Mott-insulator phase transition.
