Spin-correlation function in the two-dimensionalXYmodel

Abstract

We study the two-spin correlation function in the high-temperature phase of the two-dimensional XY model. We derive a roughening representation of this function in the generalized Villain model, which is useful for high-temperature analysis. In the ordinary Villain model, we use duality to show that the correlation function is identical at high temperatures to the spin-correlation function in the two-dimensional Ising model. We use this result, together with spin-wave analysis, to perform a Nelson-Rudnick matching calculation of the spin-correlation function in the ordinary Villain model, thereby obtaining an approximate expression for this function at all length scales and temperatures above ${T}_{c}$.

Spin-spin correlation function in the high-temperature Villain model

Robert A. Pelcovits

Considers the spin-spin correlation function in the high-temperature regime of the generalised Villain model (1975). Using the 'Debye-Huckel' approximation plus systematic corrections, the authors show that this correlation function has the expected Ornstein-Zernike form (1914) and they calculate approximately the high-temperature behaviour of the correlation length. The methods presented should prove useful in matching calculations of thermodynamic quantities in the two-dimensional XY model, and in 'Debye-Huckel' analyses of a variety of two-dimensional Coulomb gas problems.

On general- n coefficients in series expansions for row spin–spin correlation functions in the two-dimensional Ising model

Robert E. Shrock

Abstract We consider spin–spin correlation functions for spins along a row, R n = ⟨ σ 0,0 σ n ,0 ⟩, in the two-dimensional Ising model. We discuss a method for calculating general- n expressions for coefficients in high-temperature and low-temperature series expansions of R n and apply it to obtain such expressions for several higher-order coefficients. In addition to their intrinsic interest, these results could be useful in the continuing quest for a nonlinear ordinary differential equation whose solution would determine R n , analogous to the known nonlinear ordinary differential equation whose solution determines the diagonal correlation function ⟨ σ 0,0 σ n , n ⟩ in this model.

Logarithmic corrections in the two-dimensional XY model

Wolfhard Janke E

Using two sets of high-precision Monte Carlo data for the two-dimensional XY model in the Villain formulation on square L\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}L lattices, the scaling behavior of the susceptibility \ensuremath{\chi} and correlation length \ensuremath{\xi} at the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition is analyzed with emphasis on multiplicative logarithmic corrections (ln L${)}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2\mathrm{r}}$ in the finite-size scaling region and (ln \ensuremath{\xi}${)}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2\mathrm{r}}$ in the high-temperature phase near criticality, respectively. By analyzing the susceptibility at criticality on lattices of size up to ${512}^{2}$ we obtain r=-0.0270(10), in agreement with recent work of Kenna and Irving on the finite-size scaling of Lee-Yang zeros in the cosine formulation of the XY model. By studying susceptibilities and correlation lengths up to \ensuremath{\xi}\ensuremath{\approx}140 in the high-temperature phase, however, we arrive at quite a different estimate of r=0.0560(17), which is in good agreement with recent analyses of thermodynamic Monte Carlo data and high-temperature series expansions of the cosine formulation.

Spin dynamics for the one-dimensional XY model at infinite temperature

Amit Sur, David Jasnow, Irving J. Lowe

The infinite-temperature space- and time-dependent spin-correlation functions ${g}_{r}^{x}(t)$ are studied for the one-dimensional $\mathrm{XY}$ model. Numerical calculations are performed to obtain the exact autocorrelation function ${g}_{0}^{x}(t)$ for chains containing 5, 7, and 9 spins ($S=\frac{1}{2}$). This yields exact results for the first 16 moments of the frequency autocorrelation function of the infinite chain, and estimates for a few of the higher moments as well. The analysis suggests that ${g}_{0}^{x}(t)$ for the infinite chain is identical to $\frac{\mathrm{exp}(\ensuremath{-}{J}^{2}{t}^{2})}{4}$. We show that ${g}_{r}^{x}(t)$ for $r\ensuremath{\ne}0$ vanishes identically for all values of time, implying a wave-vector-independent relaxation shape function. Our result for ${g}_{0}^{x}(t)$ is compared with that obtained by Huber for the classical ($S=\ensuremath{\infty}$) chain.

Spin-spin correlation functions for the two-dimensional Ising model: Exact theory in the scaling region

We compute exactly the spin-spin correlation functions $〈{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{0,0}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{M,N}〉$ for the two-dimensional Ising model on a square lattice in zero magnetic field for $T>{T}_{c}$ and $T<{T}_{c}$. We then analyze the correlation functions in the scaling limit $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{T}_{c},{M}^{2}+{N}^{2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ such that $(T\ensuremath{-}{T}_{c})$ is fixed. In this scaling limit $〈{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{0,0}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{M,N}〉={R}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{4}}{F}_{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}(t)+{R}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{5}{4}}{F}_{1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}(t)+o({R}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{5}{4}})$, where $t$ is the scaling variable $\frac{R}{\ensuremath{\xi}}$ and ${F}_{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}(t)$ and ${F}_{1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}(t)$ are the scaling functions ($\ensuremath{\xi}$ is the correlation length). We derive exact expressions for these scaling functions, in terms of a Painlev\'e function of the third kind and analyze both the small- and large-$t$ behavior. A table of values for ${F}_{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}(t)$ (good to ten significant digits) is also given. As an application we computer the coefficients ${C}_{0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ and ${C}_{1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ in the expansion ${k}_{B}T\ensuremath{\chi}(T)={C}_{0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{|1\ensuremath{-}\frac{{T}_{c}}{T}|}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{7}{4}}+{C}_{1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{|1\ensuremath{-}\frac{{T}_{c}}{T}|}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{3}{4}}+O(1)$ of the zero-field susceptibility $\ensuremath{\chi}(T)$ as $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{T}_{c}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$.
