Strong double space-time wave packets using optical parametric amplification

Zhaoyang Li, Yuxin Leng, Ruxin Li

Abstract The space-time (ST) wave packet, a new type light source with many new features, has already found applications in weak-field optics, however its generation method limits its energy and therefore its application in strong-field optics. We report that the type-I collinear optical parametric amplification (OPA) is a natural amplifier for ST wave packets, because in it, the ST spectrum (i.e., angle-dependent phase-matching spectrum) of the signal and idler has the same analytical expression as that of ST wave packets under the narrowband approximation. The high gain in a thin-crystal OPA allows for large energy amplification while ensuring unchanged ST correlation. Meanwhile, for the first time, a double ST wave packet containing two collinear-propagating ones of the amplified signal and the generated idler via the nondegenerate OPA is reported, which with short- and long-wavelengths (relative to the degenerate-wavelength) have superluminal and subluminal velocities, respectively. This study realizes energy amplification, wavelength conversion, and velocity switching of ST wave packets and will certainly expand the application in many fields.

Spin dynamics in one-dimensional optical lattices

Huirong Zhang, Yueyang Zhai, Xuzong Chen

Dynamics for localized spin-wave packets (localized magnons) are studied in a two-component ultra-cold atom system trapped in one-dimensional optical lattices. The centre of the Gaussian wave packet produced in a ferromagnetic chain shows Bloch oscillations under an additional transverse gradient magnetic field, which can be applied to measure the many-body superexchange interaction between the nearest-neighbour atoms.

Dynamical effects in atom optics

P. A. Ruprecht, Murray Holland, Keith R. Burnett

We present numerical calculations of the evolution of an atomic wave packet in the optical potential created by a laser standing wave. These calculations do not rely on the Raman-Nath approximation, and fully account for transverse atomic motion within the standing wave. Our results show that atomic dynamics is important even for very brief interactions, and that the wave packet can become well localized during and shortly after the interaction. We propose several atomic beam splitters and deflectors which make use of this effect. This effect may also have repercussions for recent proposals to measure the position of an atom in a standing wave by monitoring the phase shift of the optical field; these schemes require that the field does not act back on the atom to alter its position wave function. A standing wave can also localize the wave packet in momentum space, which we show can be used to cool an atomic beam in one transverse dimension.
