Alternative approach to nonrelativistic perturbation theory

Abstract

The authors develop a simple alternative approach to perturbation theory in one-dimensional nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. The formulae for the energy shifts and wavefunctions do not involve cumbersome sums over intermediate states which appear in the usual Rayleigh-Schrodinger expansion. Unlike standard logarithmic perturbation theory, the approach does not utilize taking the logarithm of the wavefunction, and is therefore applicable in the same form to both the ground state and excited bound states.

Logarithmic perturbation expansions in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics

Tom D. Imbo, U. Sukhatme

We discuss an alternative method of performing coupling constant perturbation expansions in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. This method, called logarithmic perturbation theory, yields new expressions for any-order corrections En to an unperturbed bound-state energy which do not involve cumbersome sums over intermediate unperturbed states. In one dimension, these corrections En can be evaluated using a simple explicit form containing a small number of integrals. In more than one dimension the approach is systematic but computations require the solution of well-defined partial differential equations. For order n=2 this equation is identical to that appearing in the method of Dalgarno and Lewis. Numerous illustrative examples are presented.

Stationary perturbation theory without sums over intermediate states: Supersymmetric Expansion Algorithm

M. Napsuciale, S. Rodríguez

In this work we show that results of Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory can be easily obtained using the recently proposed supersymmetric expansion algorithm. Our formalism avoids the sums over intermediate states and yield directly corrections to the energy and eigenstates in terms of integrals weighted by the probability densities for the edge states of the involved supersymmetric Hamiltonians.

Derivation of the perturbation formulas for the energy in quantum mechanics

Luis Gottdiener

A method to derive the formulas for the energy appearing in the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory in quantum mechanics is presented. The procedure, which we consider to have some advantages over the usual approach, aims at solving the secular equation D (E) =0. The first-, second-, and third-order formulas are derived by this method.

Non-Hermitian generalization of Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory

Wei-Ming Chen, Yen-Ting Lin, Chia-Yi Ju

The authors develop a perturbation theory for non-Hermitian systems based on a geometric formalism that yields relatively simple recursive formulas for the perturbed eigenvectors and eigenvalues. The authors provide an example and show that the method proposed reduces to the standard Rayleigh-Schr\"odinger perturbation theory in the Hermitian regime.

New Approach to Perturbation Theory

Yakir Aharonov, C. K. Au

We present here a new approach to nonrelativistic perturbation theory. We show that in problems reducible to one dimension, the energy shifts and wave-function corrections, including corrections to the position of the nodes, to any order, can be expressed in quadrature in a hierarchy scheme. The second-order energy shift calculated is explicitly shown to be equivalent to that in the ordinary Rayleigh-Schr\"odinger theory.

New perturbation method with the matching of wave functions

Miloslav Znojil

We propose a new approach to the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation expansions of bound states in quantum mechanics. We are inspired by the enormous flexibility of solvable interactions with several (N) discontinuities. Their standard matching solution is modified and transferred in perturbation regime. We employ the global renormalization freedom of the local wave functions and derive a compact N-dimensional matrix formula for corrections. In applications, our recipe is shown non-numerical for all polynomial perturbations of any piece-wise constant zero order potential.
