Abstract

Wigner functions of permutation operators are obtained and serve as a basis for a phase-space formulation of quantum 1/2 -spin identical fermions. We prove a version of the Pauli principle for this type of particle.

On the Moyal Formulation of Quantum Identical Particles

Manuel Gadella, Luis Miguel Nieto

Wigner functions of permutation operators are obtained and are used as a basis for a phase space formulation of quantum identical particles. Non-spin systems as well as 1/2 spin systems are considered. The general results are applied to a couple of examples.

The Phase Space Formulation of Quantum Mechanics

Marcos Mariño

This chapter presents Wigner’s approach to quantum mechanics, based on the Wigner function in phase space. It explains Wigner–Weyl quantization, which makes it possible to associate functions on phase space to wave functions and operators, and it develops the technology to do quantum mechanics in this formalism. This includes the star product, Moyal evolution, and star-eigenvalue equations. It also develops semiclassical methods in this formulation, and it has a section on Berry’s semiclassical formula for the Wigner function in one-dimensional systems.

The problem of moments in the phase-space formulation of quantum mechanics

Francis J. Narcowich

Long ago, Moyal [Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 45, 99 (1949)] formulated a moment problem in the context of the Wigner–Weyl phase-space formulation of quantum mechanics. The problem amounts to giving necessary and sufficient conditions for a sequence of numbers to be moments of a Wigner function. In this paper, that problem is solved, and so is a truncated version of it.

Phase-space quantum mechanics study of two identical particles in an external oscillatory potential

Luis Miguel Nieto, Manuel Gadella

This simple example is used to show how the formalism of Moyal works when it is applied to systems of identical particles. The symmetric and antisymmetric Moyal propagators are evaluated for this case; from them, the correct energy levels of energy are obtained, as well as the Wigner functions for the symmetric and antisymmetric states of the two identical particle system. Finally, the solution of the Bloch equation is straightforwardly obtained from the expressions of the Moyal propagators.

Moyal Formulation of Quantum Mechanics

Manuel Gadella

This is a review paper on the formulation of nonrelativistic Quantum Mechanics on Phase Space. In an overlook to the traditional approach, we present the basic concepts including the Weyl mapping, the Wigner function, the Moyal propagator and the Spectral projections. We discuss the advantages and the disadvantages of this formulation. We apply it to the study of quadratic Hamiltonians. The Stratonovich-Weyl correspondence is presented as the natural framework in which the theory can be extended to include spin, relativity and constraints. The theory of identical particles is also considered.

Quantum Theory for Fermion System and its Pseudo-Classical Correspondence

Fan Hong‐Yi, Ruan Tu-Nan

On the basis of the fermionic coherent state formulation we propose the Weyl-McCoy correspondence for fermion system, from which a functional integral form without the boundary term is derived. Moreover, the generating functional, the wigner theorem and the Moyal bracket for fermion system are also demonstrated. Thus the theory of quantum mechanics for Fermi operators and its pseudo-classical correspondence is established.
