Some Consequences of Pump Coherence on Energy Exchange in Nonlinear Optical Processes

Abstract

The finite coherence time of the driving field plays an important role in the rates of energy exchange taking place in nonlinear processes. As a typical example, the problems of the quantum parametric amplifier and frequency converter driven by a fluctuating pump are considered. A closed hierarchy of equations for the moments of the fields is given, which in turn is used for evaluating the average number of photons per mode and the relative variance as functions of time. Significant deviations from the case where the pump field is coherent are found.

The effect of pump coherence on frequency conversion and parametric amplification

B. Crosignani, Paolo Di Porto, U. Ganiel +2 more

The consequences of the deviation from ideal coherence of the driving (pump) field in nonlinear processes are examined. A detailed treatment of the processes of parametric amplification and frequency upconversion is presented. The treatment utilizes two different approximation methods to suit the two different physical situations considered. For slow phase variations of the pump field an adiabatic approach is useful, whereas in the treatment of fast phase variations (the nonadiabatic case) an equation describing the time evolution of thePrepresentation is found to be a good starting point. In this latter case, a closed hierarchy of equations for the moments of the photon number distribution in the signal (or idler) mode is found. In particular, we find that the efficiencies of both the amplification and the upconversion processes are reduced as a result of pump incoherence, the reduction becoming more severe in the highly incoherent case. For the frequency converter, the very nature of the process is modified as compared to the ideal case, and this modification is again of particular significance for the highly incoherent pump. Second-order moments are explicitly calculated and some of the statistical properties of the output signals are examined.

Incoherent effects in the optical up-conversion process

W. J. Mielniczuk, Jacek Chrostowski

The theoretical treatment of the optical frequency up-conversion process with stochastic pumping is presented. This process consists of exchange of photons between two modes of different frequencies. It is assumed that the two modes are coupled by a short memory stochastic function. Statistically averaged occupation numbers of both modes were calculated exactly by means of the theory of multiplicative stochastic processes. The obtained nonperturbative solution sums secular terms and is valid for arbitrary times. The oscillatory-damped nature of the exchange of energy between two modes and the role of partial incoherence of the pump is discussed. It is shown that stochastic coupling causes the equipartition of energy between two modes for sufficiently long times. Analogies between an up-converter and a two-level atom driven by a single mode electromagnetic field are indicated. Optical Bloch equations for an up-conversion process are derived.

Dynamics of parametric processes with a trilinear hamiltonian

Govind Prasad Agrawal, C. L. Mehta

The quantum dynamics of a parametric interaction of the electromagnetic field with a nonlinear medium is considered. The three nonlinear coupled Heisenberg equations of motion are solved under the short-time approximation. The characteristic function for the normal ordering rule of association is evaluated. This function is then used to obtain the time dependence of the density operator. Assuming that the initial state of the system is a coherent state, explicit expressions for the diagonal coherent state representation of the reduced density operators for the pump as well as for the signal mode are obtained. For the pump mode, the initially coherent state remains coherent, whereas for the signal mode the diagonal coherent state representation is found to be a gaussian distribution whose variance is proportional to the average number of photons initially present in the pump mode.

Quantum theory of nonlinear optical phenomena

Miguel Orszag

The equivalence between the Hamiltonians representing nonlinear optical phenomena and N two-level atoms interacting via the electromagnetic field is exploited to find a solution to a parametric amplifier, a frequency converter and to the problems of Brillouin and Raman scattering. The n-photon probability and average number of photons as a function of time are obtained for all these cases. The results of the parametric amplifier can be readily applied to the Brillouin and Raman effects. In particular the results obtained for spontaneous fluorescence are applicable to the Stokes line of the stimulated Raman effect. Other nonlinear effects are discussed in the context of the present theory.

Limitations to squeezing in a parametric amplifier due to pump quantum fluctuations

David D. Crouch, Samuel L. Braunstein

We perform discrete-mode calculations for a parametric amplifier with a quantum pump and discuss some of the limitations on calculations of this sort in quantum optics. We calculate corrections to the squeezing due to pump quantum fluctuations to order N${\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2}$, for a pump initially in a coherent state with average photon number N\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}. We find that the limit to the variance of the squeezed quadrature due to the quantum nature of the pump goes as N${\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1/2}$. .AE

Nonequilibrium energy transport and fluctuations in two-photon-driven nonlinear quantum optical systems

Y. T. Chen, Y. W. Lu, J. C. Lu +1 more

Understanding nonequilibrium transport and fluctuations driven by nonclassical light in nonlinear quantum optical systems is challenging. Here, we formulate a driven quantum master equation in the rotating frame combined with full counting statistics, retaining the drive-induced frequency shifts in the system-reservoir interactions and providing a unified description of drive-assisted incoherent transitions based on the rotated system dressed-basis. Applied to a Kerr resonator and a nonlinear Jaynes-Cummings model, the approach reveals pronounced multiphoton-resonant enhancement of the drive input energy current, with significant high peaks under two-photon driving compared to the single-photon case. The two-photon resonance relations are analytically obtained. Resonance structure in the nonlinear Jaynes-Cummings model nonlinearly relies on qubit-photon couplings, with additional dressed-state branches. A low-energy-state approximation attributes the resonant current enhancement to dressed-state hybridization and efficient activation of incoherent energy exchange processes. Beyond the average current, two-photon-driving induced energy exchange picture near resonance also substantially modifies the second-order current fluctuation and higher-order current cumulant, while increasing the time-normalized signal-to-noise ratio. Adding two-photon loss introduces extra incoherent photon-pair exchange pathways and further reshapes the current and its fluctuations. We hope these results may deepen interpretation of photon driving and quantum dissipation cooperatively governing nonequilibrium energy transport and fluctuations.
