Measures of coherence for trapped matter waves

Sonja Franke‐Arnold, G. Huyet, Stephen Mark Barnett

We define and discuss measures of coherence for matter waves. These characterize the interference pattern arising from the overlap of one point of a matter wave with another. We identify two coherence quantities, one related to the distance between the interfering parts of a matter wave, and one describing the influence of the position within the wave. We show that our coherence properties are suitable for describing both single particles such as cold trapped ions, and many-particle systems such as Bose-Einstein condensates and Fermi gases.

Quasi-particle properties of trapped Fermi gases

Luca Giorgetti, Luciano Viverit, G. Gori +2 more

Abstract. We develop a consistent formalism in order to explore the effects of density and spin fluctuations on the quasi-particle properties and on the pairing critical temperature of a trapped Fermi gas on the attractive side of a Feshbach resonance. We first analyze the quasi-particle properties of a gas due to interactions far from resonance (effective mass and lifetime, quasi-particle strength and effective interaction) for the two cases of a spherically symmetric harmonic trap and of a spherically symmetric infinite potential well. We then explore the effect of each of these quantities on Tc and point out the important role played by the discrete level structure. Two-site anyonic Josephson junction

Alberto Brollo, A. Veronese, Luca Salasnich

Anyons are particles with intermediate quantum statistics whose wave function acquires a phase ${e}^{i\ensuremath{\theta}}$ by particle exchange. Inspired by proposals of simulating anyons using ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices, we study a two-site anyonic Josephson junction, i.e., anyons confined in a one-dimensional double-well potential. We show, analytically and numerically, that many properties of anyonic Josephson junctions, such as Josephson frequency, imbalanced solutions, macroscopic quantum self-trapping, coherence visibility, and condensate fraction, crucially depend on the anyonic angle $\ensuremath{\theta}$. Our theoretical predictions are a solid benchmark for near-future experimental quantum simulations of anyonic matter in double-well potentials.
