Nonlinear properties of optically dense medium excited by multifrequency laser radiation

К. А. Баранцев, A. N. Litvinov, Evgeniy Popov

This work is devoted to nonlinear effects in the atomic medium excited by multifrequency laser radiation. We have considered collective light scattering in the optically dense medium in conditions of coherent population trapping. Propagation of intermode correlation coefficient was calculated and it was found that correlation can increase in the medium. Light shifts of the coherent population trapping resonances and ways of their suppression were analyzed. Propagation of radiation in the medium with closed excitation scheme was investigated.

Laser cooling of an expanding ultracold plasma

N. Ya. Shaparev, Nikolai Shaparev

We analyze the resonance absorption spectrum of ions in an expanding ultracold spherical plasma. It is shown that the spectrum width is controlled by the highest expansion velocity at the sphere boundary. As the expansion velocity grows, the initial optical thickness of the medium decreases and the medium becomes transparent. We suggest a broadband laser radiation in the red absorption spectrum of ions be used to decelerate ions in an expanding plasma in order to achieve crystallization.

Absorption of powerful resonance radiation accompanying collisional line broadening

Sergei I Yakovlenko

This review gives a systematic exposition of the qualitative problems of nonlinear laser resonance spectroscopy, taking into account the effect of the light field on the dynamics of the broadening collision and, correspondingly, on the rate of phase relaxation. The results of experiments, in which these nonlinear optocollisional effects, predicted earlier theoretically, were observed, are presented briefly.

Light scattering from a dense and ultracold atomic gas

Igor M. Sokolov, Mariia Kupriyanova, Dmitriy V. Kupriyanov +1 more

The quantum optical response of high-density ultracold atomic systems is important to a wide range of fundamentally and technically important physical processes. We present here a microscopic analysis of the light scattering on such a system and compare it with a corresponding description based on macroscopic Maxwell theory. Results are discussed in the context of the spectral resonance structure of the scattering cross section, the time-dependent response under a range of conditions, and evolution of these quantities as the atomic density is varied. For high atomic densities, the microscopic theoretical treatment reveals a distributed and configuration-dependent narrow resonance structure. This structure is attributed to microcavity spatial structures associated with the dense and ultracold atomic gases.

Resonance phenomena in saturation of absorption by laser radiation

Vladilen S Letokhov, V. P. Chebotaev

The review deals with resonance phenomena resulting from saturation of low-pressure-gas absorption lines by a coherent optical field, when the spectral lines are inhomogeneously broadened by the Doppler effect. Principal attention is paid to narrow resonances of width much smaller than the Doppler widths, which are produced upon saturation of the absorption by light waves under various experimental conditions (inside and outside the laser resonator, in traveling and standing waves, in spatially separated waves, etc.), owing to different effects (absorption saturation, mode interaction in the laser). Each of the phenomena is considered from both the theoretical and the experimental points of view. The phenomena considered serve as a basis of a new branch of optical spectroscopy, namely nonlinear laser spectroscopy of ultrahigh resolution.

Mesoscopic Electromagnetic Wave Dynamics in Ultracold Atomic Gases

Robin Kaiser, Mark D. Havey

Ultracold atomic gases present a unique medium for studies of classical and quantum optical phenomena. Recent research on coherent multiple light scattering in such media shows a range of surprising effects, and suggests possibilities for strong localization of electromagnetic radiation in a dense and ultracold atomic gas sample.
