Distribution of level populations for a three-level system in resonance interaction with three strong fields

Abstract

A stationary distribution of populations in a three-level quantum system interacting with three intense monochromatic fields resonant to two allowed and one forbidden transition is determined for three possible configurations of the considered system. The obtained algebraic expressions for populations of levels are exact within the frameworks of RWA and dependent on the phases of fields even in the limit of strong field intensities. The latter circumstance causes the absorption line profile to be noisy due to random phase modulation of fields. The sets of parameters of the system and field are founded at which the populations of all the levels are equal to 1/3 also with the regions where a resonance-like dependence of level populations on the difference of field phases takes place.

Interaction of a three-level system with two strong fields

Ludmila S. Kancheva, D. I. Pushkarov

General expressions for the steady-state population distribution and complex susceptibilities of a three-level system interacting with two strong near-resonant electromagnetic fields are obtained using a density-matrix formalism. A complete treatment of the steady-state population distribution established in the three-level system, under the action of two strong fields with arbitrary resonance detunings is presented. The criterion for maximal populations of the exciting levels, as well as conditions in which the population of the exciting levels exceeds the population of the ground state are found. The modification of the absorption and emission lines with increasing intensity of the second (probe) field is considered. The emphasis in the present treatment, as distinct from Panock and Temkin (see IEEE J. Quantum Electron., vol.QE-13, p.476 (1977)) is on the consideration of the arbitrary distribution of the equilibrium populations of the system which exhibits a number of interesting features which have not been previously discussed.

Interference phenomena in Doppler broadened quantum transitions: Amplification of intense radiation without population inversion

A. K. Popov, V. M. Kuchin, S. A. Myslivets

We study the effect of nonlinear interference processes on quantum transitions in intense resonant electromagnetic fields with allowance for changes in level populations, relaxation processes, incoherent excitation, and Doppler broadening of the transitions, on the absorption, amplification, and refraction of the interacting fields. The theory is generalized to the case of nonlinear interference interaction of two intense fields in open and closed three-level quantum systems. Using the density matrix, we derive general expressions in the case of stationary interaction that make it possible to analyze the optical characteristics for various configurations of the interfering transitions by a simple substitution of parameters. The possibility of amplifying light without saturated population inversion in a resonant transition is discussed. We formulate the conditions for such amplification and use examples to show that under appropriate changes in the initial level populations and the intensity of the auxiliary light, the inversionless amplification coefficient does not decrease with increasing intensity of the amplified radiation. We also show that allowance for these accompanying processes greatly affects the choice of optimal conditions for interference in optical transitions. As an illustration we list the results of a numerical analysis of possible experiments.

The Effect of Collisions on the Resonance Fluorescence Spectrum of Three-Level Atoms with a V-Configuration of Levels

А. И. Пархоменко, Anatolii M. Shalagin

The effect of collisions on the resonance fluorescence spectrum of three-level atoms with a V-configuration of levels when excited by two monochromatic resonance fields has been theoretically investigated. The analysis has been carried out for the systems with a small Doppler broadening compared to the collision frequency (high buffer gas pressures) and for the general case of an arbitrary change (from complete failure to complete preservation) of the phase memory at any of the three transitions in the V-system. It has been shown that in the three-level V-type atoms excited by two monochromatic fields, the resonant fluorescence spectrum (the number of spectral lines and their widths) at one of the transitions strongly depends on the presence of resonant radiation at the adjacent transition. Under certain conditions, the line widths will be completely determined by the relaxation characteristics of the adjacent transition and, in particular, can be repeatedly narrowed with an increase in the radiation intensity at the adjacent transition. It has been shown that despite the homogeneous nature of the broadening of the absorption lines, the resonance fluorescence spectrum has a pronounced anisotropy with respect to the mutual orientation of the wave vectors of spontaneous and exciting radiation. It has been established that the line widths in the resonance fluorescence spectrum are proportional to the diffusion coefficient of the atoms interacting with radiation under certain conditions. This fact can serve as the basis for a spectroscopic method for measuring the transport frequencies of the collisions of the radiation-absorbing particles with the buffer ones. It has been shown that the effects of phase memory in the collisions lead to a strong qualitative and quantitative modification of the resonance fluorescence spectrum.

Coherent phenomena in multilevel systems with closed interaction contour

Dmitry V. Kosachiov, Boris G. Matisov, Yu. Rozhdestvensky

The work presented considers a new coherent phenomenon, i.e. the influence of the phases of electromagnetic fields interacting with a multilevel system on the character of excitation of this system. On the basis of analysing the equation for an N-level quantum system density matrix, it was established that in multilevel systems containing a closed contour of transitions, resonantly interacting with the field, stationary populations always depend on the total interaction contour phase Phi . For the simplest multilevel systems, i.e. three-level, the authors have obtained analytical expressions, connecting populations with the relative field phase in such systems. Thus, for a Lambda system, interacting with three resonant electromagnetic fields, it is discovered that, depending on the total phase value of the transition contour, both destruction and successive restoration of a coherent trapping state can take place. The work provides qualitative explanations of phase effects and suggests some possibilities for their application.

Sum third order frequency mixing of a strong bichromatic field interacting with a three-level atom

K.J. Woloschuk, S. Hontzeas, D.A. Hutchinson +1 more

We have considered the excitation spectra of three-photon processes arising from the interaction of a three-level atom, in the cascade configuration, with two strong electromagnetic fields whose initially populated modes ω a and ω b are near resonance with the atomic transition frequencies ω21 and ω32, respectively. In the limit of high photon densities, expressions for the Green's functions are derived in a closed form describing third order nonlinear processes in the region of frequencies ω = ω a + 2ω b and ω = ω b + 2ω a , respectively. Numerical calculations are then performed and the computed spectra are presented graphically for different values of the Rabi frequencies Ω a and Ω b , and detunings ζ a and ζ b , respectively. The excitation spectrum near ω = ω a + 2ω b is calculated as a function of the parameters η a = Ω a /γ0, η b = Ω b /γ0, ζ a = (ω21 - ω a )/γ0 and ζ b = (ω32 - ω b )/γ0 where γ0 is the spontaneous transition probability. With no detuning the spectral intensities vary slowly with respect to variations of the Rabi frequencies and are shifted by amounts governed by the field strengths η a and η b . In the presence of detunings, asymmetries, characteristics of such off-resonance situations, arise enhancing certain spectral peaks while diminishing the intensity of others.

Resonance fluorescence spectra from a three-level atom interacting with a strong bichromatic field

M. P. Sharma, Antonio Guillermo Jose Balbin Villaverde, Constantine Mavroyannis

We have studied the fluorescence spectra arising from the interaction of a three-level atom with two strong electromagnetic fields whose initially populated modes are equal to the two atomic transition frequencies, respectively. The Green's function formalism has been used to calculate the excitation spectrum of the system. An expression for the spectral function describing the excitation spectrum of the system has been derived in a closed form in the limit of high photon densities. Numerical computation of the expression for the spectral function indicates that at each transition frequency there may exist either one pair or two pairs or three pairs of sidebands, in addition to the central peak, depending upon the relative strength of the Rabi frequencies involved.
