Abstract

A model of an optical neural network with associative memory using stimulated photon echo (SPE) with temporal data coding is presented. The electrical field’s calculation of the SPE signals is carried out for case of multiple influences on the resonant medium by optical pulses. A computer model of an optical echo processor with associative retrieval of information is elaborated.

Storage and associative recall of images by stimulated photon echoes

Yong R. Kim

The photon echo is unique among nonlinear optical effects in that it involves interference and diffraction in both space and time domain. This intrinsic spatio-temporal property offers multitude of interesting and useful applications in optical storage and processing of temporally as well as spatially encoded data. In this paper we consider the possibility of using stimulated photon echo (SPE) to implement all-optical associative memory of spatial data.

Alexey I. Kalachev, Самарцев Виталий Владимирович, Leonid A. Nefediev

The possible applications of polarization and temporal peculiarities of long-lived stimulated photon echo in LaF3:Pr3+ were analyzed. The influence of the excited pulses polarization on time-profile of LSPE was considered. It's discussed the possibility of using time-polarization processing of information in systems of optical memory and optical echo- processors.

Excitation of photon echo by pulses modulated with Barker codes

Баруздин Сергей Анатольевич

The excitation of the primary and stimulated photon echoes by pulses modulated in phase with Barker codes is modeled. The shape of the complex envelopes of the primary and stimulated echoes is found by solving the optical Bloch equations. Linear and nonlinear excitation modes are considered. In linear modes, it is possible to realize a time delay and form the correlation function of modulated pulses. The results obtained can be used in modeling and analyzing the corresponding algorithms of the photon echo excitation and in calculating the characteristics of signal processors based on the phenomena of photon and spin echoes.

Spectral programming of temporal pulse sequences using photon echoes

B. Luo, Ulf Elman, Stefan Kröll +1 more

Optical memories based on spectral hole burning (SHB) and stimulated photon echoes (SPE) are attracting much attention. Both approaches add an extra dimension for addressing (frequency and temporal dimension respectively) to the spatial dimensions. With these concepts the storage density can become 103 – 106 times higher than in conventional optical memories. In both approaches, the ratio of the inhomogeneous line width to the homogeneous line width of the ions activated in the storage process determines the improvement in storage density. Compared to the SHB approach, SPE has certain advantages including high R/W rate and ability to process the stored (spatial as well we temporal) information. Using SPE, the authors have experimentally realised the AND, OR and NOT logical operations [1,2]. Further all optical processing, such as temporal pattern recognition, can be done using SPE.

Numerical Solution and Applications of Photon Echo

Longzhao Lu, Cheng Li, Xiangyang Yu

Important applications in optical information storage and processing based on photon echo have been developed. An accurate and effective numerical method to solve the Maxwell-Bloch equations that are used to describe the optical pulse propagation and interaction with inhomogeneously broadened two-level medium will be introduced.Two-pulse photon echo is calculated then photon echo and multiple-pulse photon echoes are stimulated in optical thin(thick) media by using the method, and the physical properties of those echoes are analyzed. The results show that the approach to storage and retrieval of light using multiple-pulse photon echoes based on stimulated photon echo is an effective mode.

This report summarizes the results of a 3-year program of research on the physics and technology needed to develop high-performance optical memory and optical processing systems based on the concept called the stimulated photon echo (SPE). The research goals were investigation, demonstration, and improvement of signal strength and fidelity, architectures and algorithms, and materials properties for optical storage and in-memory processing. Key accomplishments were (1) development and demonstration of efficient algorithms for threshold discrimination and bit-error-rate reduction in retrieved binary images with large in-frame and frame-to-frame intensity variations; (2) demonstration and characterization of information storage in Erbium-doped crystals using 1.5-micron diode lasers compatible with fiber optic communications; (3) demonstration of improved phase-encoding schemes for in-memory temporal correlation of 1.5-micron pulse trains; (4) development of concepts for high-performance radar applications based on SPE optical memory for time-delay control of the transmitter array and in-memory image processing of the return signals; and (5) hosting the AFOSR Contractors' Meeting, "Optoelectronic Information Processing."
